[serious] Visa(s), they can take weeks for Oz if you have any driving offences like - even 40 year old ones Banghead[/serious]
Would this be a good time to say that Oz wine costs ~twice as much there as the same bottle does in Tescos here?
Just renewed our driving licences - replaced paper with photo ID plastic and both will be clean... cloud9:
I presume Oz booze is cheap compared to Dubai...? scared2:
Never been to Dubai so no idea. everything is expensive in Oz
'winging' Sydney is the best plan. You need to find it your way not some rehash of other people's visits and of course miss things your way because you will never do it all. And then of course you'll want to go back again . . . and again and . . .
Clean licences don't count. The question they ask you is have you ever been convicted of anything. If you lie and they find out you will be barred for something like 3 years. And apparently they do some checks between granting the visa and your passport being scanned on arrival in Oz.
What seems to happen Visa wise is if you say no convictions ever the E-Visa comes through in seconds and if you say yes it goes into someone's in tray. In my case for just under 2 weeks. Google the issue and you'll see some people effed it up.

Did you know they have killer snails in Oz? Imagine one of those horrors chasing you, eh!!
rubschin:
I shall tell LL that their natural habitat is 'spensive shops...
doh: why oh why didn't I think of that?
point: point: point:

We arrive in Sydney with me needing a jacket (see Dec 23rd posts) and she needing absolutely nothing (we'd brought 5 tons of clothes) I get a jacket in first shop we go in. So guess who spends ages in shops while she dithers over what she wants. Country Road then Myers, the Witchery, then David Jones, then Country Road, RJ Williams etc etc again repeat ad infinitum
And the bad news for you is the great thing about the Radisson is it is easy walking distance not just to the Quay but also the serious shops. Although there is the most jaw dropping looking red headed shop assistant in one of them
Shall I PM to LL with a list? angel1

Miss I is being sent on a mission to Sydney. I must warn her angel1
How about warning Sydney?
PS she’ll love it. Bestest city in the world
Are there loads of lezzers there...?
Not obviously to the eye but it does set out to be a very gay tolerant and even at times celebrant city. Miss I will likely be there around their Gay Mardi Gras season
During their summer Sydney (like all the Oz cities) is teeming with stunning totty cleavage and legs. Somehow I’ve never asked any of them which side they bat for.

Never done Wellington nor the West coast of South island
Christchurch was good but it’s had an earthquake or two since we were there (not our fault, honest)
You can do Kaikoura and back in a days driving trip from Christchurch although in our case it helped that the whale watch was called off for bad weather
Surprised you’re not seemingly doing Mt Cook region (we stayed in Lake Tekapo) it is stunning. And not doing Rotorua (bit commercialised but amazing geysers)

It is tough to know what to do and trying to squeeze too much in one trip probably isn't wise... noooo:
This follows on from three hectic weeks on the North Island! eeek:
I do have my doubts about Christchurch tho because of the 'quakes so we may play around with that for a bit... I've seen geysers-a-plenty in Yellowstone so am prepared to give Rotorua a miss... ;)

Christchurch will have good hotels though. You can only slum it for so many days in less
You may have a point on Rotorua. It was spectacular but had all the appearance of a theme park. Not done Yellowstone but did do Iceland where it was very scary with absolutely no elf and safety at all
But Mount Cook just has to be done

I fink we’ll never do Yellowstone. Was going to do it last year with the eclipse but USA is on our no go list right now cos of that oaf

Yep, worrying how it seemed to fit me so well
And you have to put everything in a locker. The really clever bit is that yellow thing down by my right hand side. It's attached to you and a rail that goes the whole way of the walk up and down. So if you slip you can't fall and splat some poor sod on the bridge below.
Oh and once you've booked your timeslot you have to do it then even if it's pouring with rain.

Theirs... Unfortunately you are not allowed to take your own action cam - I wanted to mount mine forward facing but you have to leave everything in a locker at the start point... evil:

Lazy day today - mostly around the pool at the hotel although we may squeeze in Van Gogh Alive - The Experience this arvo as it is just up the road... rubschin:
Taxis have been great here - they are all Toyota Camrys and in perfect condition - we had a Hybrid yesterday. All the drivers a forrin of course but they know their stuff. Think we only got ripped once, the journey back (the driver didn't know where the hotel was so he had to get his sat nag to direct) being significantly shorter and cheaper than the journey there...
I'd love to have a go at driving here - it is like organised road racing! The only downside is that red traffic lights last forever! Haven't seen any accidents nor an obvious presence of the police...
Off at 6pm, flight at 9:30...

So, being Easter, everything carries a 10% surcharge! cussing:
And driving offences get doubled demerits! eeek:
Apparently the surcharge is to cover, "extra staff costs"... ::)
I have no idea how they justify giving you more points for speeding for example because it is a holiday weekend...? Shrugs:
Anyhoo, general impressions so far are that I LOVE 'Stralia! ;D
The local beers are delicious! cloud9:
People are very friendly, the place is beautiful and I'd want to come back for sure. Sydney town is a bit of a mess as they have all the roads dug up to put a tram system in that they, er dug up recently but apart from that it really is a beautiful city...

Should have warned you over that 10%, it's a complicated story to do with restaurants have to pay double wages on those days. Oz has a lot of labour rules. The tram plan is a farce, it'll be a failure like the monorail they took out from the Chinatown/Darling Harbour area a couple of years back
Was the Radisson OK or did you move?
But the sad news is no I can't see the pics as no Arsebook account.

So, we get off the plane and pass through the electronic passport scanning...
On the other side there is a monitor that says the Sydney flight luggage is on carousel 6. We are standing at carousel 1...
So we walk down past carousel 2, past carousel 3, past carousel 4, past carousel 5 and between us and carousel 6 is a mahoosive customs wumman who says, "JOIN THAT LINE". So we join the line...
Immigration is simple, couple of questions then we are through... we have to put our carry-on bags through the X-Ray machine, get sniffed by the drugs dog and then woo-hooo, we are, um in the arrivals hall, being met but with no luggage...
So, we can't go back into the customs hall, we are directed outside and to the handling agent... which is closed... Press (repeatedly) the 24 hour call bell but nothing, the plane was late arriving so we are like 2:30am in the dark and nothing... I head back to the terminal and find the tallest security officer you have ever seen in your life!
The security officer takes me back outside and waves his pass in front of a scanner which miraculously produces an employee who then goes off to find our luggage - the automatic door closes and we are trapped in a 2m x 2m 'waiting room' waiting for numpty to find our luggage and take it to security where it was all opened and inspected... God knows what time we got to bed...

We liked Auckland a lot on first visit but less so 2nd time. IMHO it's not so much a tourist destination more a place to live. Do they still call the bridge the Nippon Clip-On?
(BTW if you see a short angry 'lady' with an umbrella she keeps clumsily jabbing people with, best to just kick her in front of a truck - that's what we should have done with the stupid cow)

I'll convert the others...
FaceArse seems to fuck about with albums of pictures and displays different numbers to different people... Pile of shite.
Yes, the Nippon Clip-ons are still known as such... Apparently the original (British built) bridge was full to capacity and they had to add the two extra lanes from Japan on each side... The British bits are apparently still in tip top condition while the clip-ons are as rusty as an extremely rusty thing... noooo:
Haven't seen a lady with an umbrella as described but have seen plenty of 'ladies' in town... noooo:

And to think once upon a time that's as many pics as many took in an entire holiday. And then had to wait for them to be developed

Just watched the bins being emptied! lol:
They have a council service here and competing private companies (although you still have to pay for the council service).
Private company turns up in a single-operator truck that has a grab arm that lifts up the wheelie bin and empties it into the truck.
Council service turns up to empty their bins (different colour) in the same single-operator type of truck but with another bloke that has to peel a tag off the bin before the truck can empty it... facepalm:

Google! worthy:
No dash cam yet, we are being driven... first chance out on the roads on our own (dash cam, GoPro, GPS, etc.) is next week...
A load of yesterday was off road (well, rubble roads) so dash cam would have recorded clouds of dust anyways...

 some stunners in there but WTF is a (Cavalli) Rural Fire Party - it sounds scared2: No, hold that: Google knows everyfink (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/northland-age/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503402&objectid=11551576)
How's Dash Cam doing?
Google! worthy:
No dash cam yet, we are being driven... first chance out on the roads on our own (dash cam, GoPro, GPS, etc.) is next week...
A load of yesterday was off road (well, rubble roads) so dash cam would have recorded clouds of dust anyways...
;D

I used to have a 'proper' DSLR - a Sony Alpha with a collection of lenses bu anted something longer...
A Sony zoom lens of ~300mm cost ŁŁŁŁŁŁs but while looking I stumbled across 'super zoom' bridge cameras... So I sold the Sony and all the lenses to pay for this.
The lens on this thing is sensational, f2.8 throughout the entire zoom range!
I never pint anything bigger that A4 so the reduced sensor size (from a DSLR) has never affected me...
The only problem is that is is so capable I tend to leave it on 'P' and let it do its stuff - when it comes to Shutter Priority for moving chopper blades and water, etc. I'm like, err.... redface:

Unfortunately, when he let me have a go the Routemaster produced smoke and stopped... redface:
Just like the real ones then
Nuffin model wise beats slot car racing like Scalextric . If I had one of those model road systems as a 6 year old I'd have spent a few hours staging spectacular accidents and then it would have gone into a cupboard rarely to reappear
But at his age?
But then seems it does rain a lot in Auckland.

It is an obsession! eeek:
He spends hours scaling the Interwebz for the parts he needs...
Clever bloke tho, he designed the layout (which is going to be permanent in the garage, not on the floor) in 3D CAD and designed the 'missing' track sections and got them 3D printed...
He has a 'n' gauge 9mm layout and this will be an 'OO' mixed car/train layout - with Hornby 'Living Steam' engines! eeek:
But then he has just shown me his 'shopping list'... everything they have ever bought in the supermarket listed in the order that the supermarket is laid out. So you just circle the bits you need this week and then take the shortest route around the supermarket to get them... noooo:

The Lektrik Company demands access to your water heater supply or charges you extra for all your 'normal' lektrik....
So when the system is under stress (like now after the storms) they simply switch off your water heater remotely! eeek:
Just had a bleddy cold shower! cussing:

NZ Day 11 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/Qbk7CKTelkamJZRe2)
Lazy day today with a slow start waiting for the weather to decide what to do.
Had a tour round this afternoon, Panmure Basin, Glendowie Sandspit, One Tree Hill to see the devastation cased by the storms this week then finally climbed to the top of One Tree Hill (for Steve).

Oh no don't blame me, I said NOT worth diverting away from a beer for.
Anyway when we did it we drove up most of the way redface:
 the pics. Some devastation that Nick causes when he merely thinks 'Auckland'

It can't be just the camera. He has to have panned across at perfect pace while on high zoom. A skill I'd love to have

NZ Day 14 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/KLNHqo2R4werSMFw1)
Lovely drive from Auckland to Rotorua stopping for lunch in the Sweet Painted Lady Cafe in Waharoa…
A beer or three then a hot shower (still not hot water in Auckland) and ready to explore in the morning…
Getting used to the smell of Sulphur… confused:
Just blame it on the dog
Love that Trompe-l'śil in the cafe

NZ Day 15 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/W8P8yBNuvQeReQyS2)
Breakfast then hot spa at The Polynesian Spa which was surprisingly exhausting!
Then explored the rest of down town Rotorua…
Anybody not interested in Sea Planes may wish to speed flick this album…
LL feeling poorly sick ill... confused:
Oh, and the reason for the picture of the butcher's shop is that in Auckland they have obscured fronts as though something naughty is going on or juveniles cannot be exposed the the raw meat therein... ::)
Oh, and the reason for the pictures of the DUKW is that they had faux ones in Auckland! lol:

Cheaper at Sainsburys, just. That bottle above goes for Ł7 there (just under NZ$14)
Just find it bonkers that Oz/NZ wine is cheaper in the UK than where it's made even with all the transport costs.
Tax... evil:
It'll be as cheap as chips in Cyprus (if I can find it) without that there Ł2 duty and 20% VAT on top... cloud9:
SiL was gutted to discover that the wine he was pouring down his throat in Cyprus for €3.19 a bottle was significantly more 'spensive in the UK when he returned to stock up... lol:
Stralia an NZ are more Nanny state than the UK amazingly... noooo:

NZ Day 16 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/g9m6IqSW0XiNKW3W2)
Rotorua
Started the day with a Dog’s Bollocks Burger while LL had something on her plate which looked like it had come from another part of the animal…
Then off to see some old geysers, a walk round some thermal pools close to the hotel and a surprise remembrance service in the park opposite the hotel.

. . .... I've seen geysers-a-plenty in Yellowstone so am prepared to give Rotorua a miss... ;)
They look more impressive in the pictures than they are IMHO... I think Yellowstone has spoilt us...
And $58 each for the privilege! eeek:
Ouch!
It was cheaper in 1996
I doubt if petrol was $2 then either...?
Well there hangs a story
Around then NZ finally introduced compulsory unleaded fuel and the most popular brand had an unfortunate side effect that it rotted the fuel systems of certain old cars (old Austin Allegroes were very hot in NZ then). We'd be driving along listening to the radio and there's be regular reports of cars bursting into flame.
So in a sense it was more than $2 if it meant your prized Allegro went up in flames

I was told that was cheap imported fuel (from Indonesia?) containing a large %'age of Ethanol... ::)
Luckily plenty survived - the classic car scene is obviously quite big here... Have seen some beauties!

I did read some time ago that the story was apocryphal as NZ just always had that many car fires but some wanted it blamed on the unpopular unleaded fuel
Frankly if I owned an Austin Allegro I'd pay someone to torch it - but not those Jags

NZ Day 17 Rotorua to Auckland
Photo light day today, a lovely drive from Rotorua back to Auckland stopping at Patetonga (where???) for lunch at a lovely roadside cafe…
All packed up now and ready to fly Auckland >>> Wellington tomorrow morning…
If you see Mt Taranaki (Mt Egmont) on the flight please say . . . .
. . . . . and I will spit feathers (long story not really worth telling, are they ever?)
Sitting on the right side!
As a kid we got bleeding inundated with artefacts featuring bleeding Mt Egmont so in 96 we made a special trek to New Plymouth to see it. Turns out Taranaki/Egmont is only visible something like one day in 10 and none of the days we were there were lucky ones

Good flight, not too windy at Windy Wellington and a quick drive to the rather quirky GT Museum Hotel (https://www.qthotelsandresorts.com/wellington/).
Unpacked and then explored the harbour area before a few beers and something to eat...

NZ Day 18 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/R5GbqzkQeQHefozr1)
Auckland To Wellington
Good flight, not too windy at Windy Wellington and a quick drive to the rather quirky GT Museum Hotel (https://www.qthotelsandresorts.com/wellington/).
Unpacked and then explored the harbour area before a few beers and something to eat...

NZ Day 19 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/FdKWzkcoGAUqM9U73)
Wellington.
Exploring Wellington in the sunshine again – what a lovely city!
Walked through the harbour, took the cable car to the botanical gardens and met a very friendly Apiarist who told us all about his art while surrounded by a cloud of bees!
Then back down to the town stopped at a lovely old pub for a beer and back to the hotel.
Some pictures are duplicated due to a camera (photographer redface:) malfunction...

NZ Day 20 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/g7cDDlIDcJOio5nn1)
Wellington
Interesting day, walked up the road and got breakfast, then a visit to the Weta Workshop which was terrible - 1˝ hours of our lives that we will never get back… facepalm:
However, the Weta Workshop people (Lord of the Rings, Avatar, etc.) were responsible for the models in the ‘Gallipoli The Scale of Our War’ exhibition at the Museum of New Zealand where we went next – it was sensational! A detailed time-line of the Gallipoli invasion with various exhibits, commentaries from veterans and the most incredible models of the participants – they look ‘real’ but must be at lest 4m tall! Extremely moving… cry:
Eating in the hotel (Hot Sauce Restaurant where a transvestite welcomed us when we went to book a table earlier! eeek:) and then off to Picton on the ferry early doors tomorrow…

NZ Day 21 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/SBXrPkXNZHJx7Kui1)
Wellington to Picton to Marlborough
Splendid day!
Up early for a taxi to the inter Island Ferry, the most beautiful crossing to the South Island landing at Picton and then a lovely drive to Marlborough. The most beautiful scenery in Marlborough Sounds and seals too!
Took LL to the hospital as she still has a bad cough where they made her wear a mask and put her in isolation! Thankfully released shortly thereafter when Bronchitis was diagnosed and new meds prescribed.
Then a quick wander round the town via the beautiful war memorial and off to a ‘Gastro Pub’ (with a hidden secret) for dinner and collapso...

NZ Day 22 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/kAVxU5kOfcVnYFqf2)
Marlborough Wine Tour
What a perfect day to spend the day! Weather was lovely, joined a small group (6 including us) of lovely people (4 from Sydney and us, but you can’t have everything) drinking fabulous wines and having sensational food for lunch…
We’ve bought so much collapso we’ll never get it home so will probably have to drink most of it here.
Tomorrow is ANZAC day. We are heading off to the Peter Jackson Dangerous Skies exhibition and then driving down to Kaikoura.

Taken very seriously but we skipped it...
We went to the Aviation Heritage Centre instead which was the only place open (for obvious reasons) and then headed off...
Apparently they do 'something' on November 11th but today is the big day...
It would be lovely to see the sort of respect they show here on Nov 11th... all shops closed, etc.

Nov 11th is much less observed in Oz that it is in the UK. Was somewhat disappointed as I'd heard very much the opposite

NZ Day 23 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/gPXVJIvRFMjQQqmH2)
Blenheim to Kaikoura
Splendid day again…
Left the hotel after breckers and headed off to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre (the P-40E is for sale, if anybody has a spare few millions lying around I could put a bid in for us... Oh, and my birthday is coming up too...).
The museum had the most amazing Stalingrad presentation – a 360 degree video show with commentary, simply amazing and incredibly moving...
After a few hours there we had the most wonderful drive South to Kaikoura… Sadly a camera (and amateur photographer) simply can’t capture the beauty of the scenery!
Checked into a lovely hotel on the shore front and headed into ‘town’ for meal…
Whale watching tomorrow (although we have done a bit of that today too)...

NZ Day 24 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/zMKNwBdWvHddvK2y2)
Whale watching in Kaikoura (Whale heavy album!)
Drove into town and had breakfast the off Whale watching!
An amazing trip, the photos really don’t do it justice at all (the video is marginally better). It was so exciting when the crew spotted the first spout and then, right in front of us a mahoosive Sperm Whale!
Then they got a call on the radio to the location of a pod of Pilot Whales which we watched for some time before getting a call to a second Sperm Whale sighting!
So in all we saw: -
2 x Sperm Whales 1 x huge pod of Pilot Whales Seals Albetrosses
It was awesome! Bizarrely Kaikoura used to be a whaling port and now they still make the majority of their income from the whales but in a different way…
Then after landing we drove up the road to the local seal sanctuary to get up close and personal with the locals...
After that a jug of beer and some food in front of a roaring log fire to finish the day.
Oh, and then I spilt a bottle of red wine on the floor of the bedroom... redface:

No, won't forget it for sure - and want to come back now...
Not sure what the pile of stones was about, they were just sort of 'there'... I'm amazed that no little sprog had knocked them over... ::)

NZ Day 26 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/a32Em5CgTb1tuCFT9)
(NZ Day 25 was a lovely drive from Kaikoura to Christchurch stopping for lunch at some place that nobody has heard of...)
Christchurch
A rainy day but we dropped off the hire car and walked into the city.
It is beautiful, so tragic that so much was destroyed in the earthquake or under repair. It is bizarre how some buildings have been destroyed completely while others remained undamaged.
Anyway, we had a lovely walk round and took the hop-on hop-off tram tour too.
Didn’t take my camera so just pictures from my phone.

Obviously lots of work going on...
The car rental drop-off place is an empty field with a shed on Google Earth but we unexpectedly came across a brand-new multi-story facility when we got there!

NZ Day 27 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/1vDpjziAkuoJ8s9MA)
TranzAlpine Christchurch to Greymouth.
Early start from Christchurch, taxi to the station then boarded the TranzAlpine to Greymouth.
Train as lovely, staff were wonderful and the views sensational…
Weather was not fantastic but leaning out (strictly verboten) of the observation car to take pictures of the scenery (and driver) was great fun…
Unfortunately, I managed to delete a whole load of pictures (mostly of the diesel engines pulling the train) from my phone which is poorly…
Picked up hire car (another Kia Sportage) at the station and headed off to the motel in the ‘High Street’ which was miles from anywhere…
Had a quick explore of the local area (some strange shops) then stumbled into the most amazing hotel/bistro/grog shop/restaurant right across the road from the Motel!
So some booze and sensational food laters we re back to the motel.
Asked a local what we should see in Greymouth before heading off to Franz Josef and he said, just leave, LEAVE NOW! eeek:

NZ Day 28 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/MSfpcLGUlHBokyFf2)
Greymouth to Franz Josef
Left a rainy Greymouth at 10:30 and had a beautiful drive South stopping at Hokitika for breakfast.
The weather improved as we headed South (contrary to expectations) and we had some wonderful mountain views.
Motel is lovely, just outside the ‘town’ and we have sheep and Alpaca as neighbours (Alpacas are Rocket, Mustang and Batman, the sheep are Milly, Molly and Mumma)…
A quick trip into ‘town’ for provisions (booze) and chose an eating venue for this evening… Several of the restaurants offer a collection/delivery service (customers, not food!) so we don’t have to drive…
So we chose the Alice May restaurant… what an amazing history and incredible food too! Google her, you won’t regret it...
Franz Josef Glacier tomorrow...

NZ Day 29 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/6ZXbkYiQptferKBZA)
Franz Josef Glacier
Woke up to beautiful sunshine and after a quick breakfast headed off to the glacier.
Everything was remarkably well organised and we got kitted up, (boots, socks, jackets, trousers gloves and crampons!) and headed off to the helicopter.
A short flight later and we had landed on the glacier – the pictures simply can’t convey the scale of the thing (or the beauty for that matter). I thought we were going to have a quick hike to the top then noticed the teeny tiny people on the glacier and realised the huge size!
The ice at the landing zone hadn’t had the sun on it and you literally couldn’t stand up without fitting the crampons.
There hadn’t been any tours for a few days so it was as new to the guide as it was to us – the glacier moves at over 1m per day and 5m in some places! We trekked up the slope past the huge ice things (I can’t remember the proper name) with our group leader cutting steps with his ice axe!
It was fabulous…
When we came back down the weather was closing in and it was touch-and go if we would be trapped on the ice for a night – they have tents stored there just in case – or be able to be flown out. Luckily the helicopter got in to remove us but all afternoon flights were cancelled. We lave tomorrow, how lucky we have been with the weather!

Franz Josef to Queenstown
Woke to a beautiful sunny day and set off for Queenstown (~350Km) at 10am…
Stunning scenery all the way, wanted to stop every few minutes and capture another ‘Kodak Moment’…
Eventually stopped at Wanaka for coffee and a bit to eat where we discovered Eels! Huge Eels and Rainbow Trout waiting to be fed at the end of the jetty!
Then onto Queenstown and checked into our lovely hotel which has lovely views over Lake Wakatipou.

NZ Day 31 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/q5a2GJkrLHBax1WD8)
Queenstown.
Another fabulous day – soooo lucky with the weather!
Had breakfast in town and then boarded TSS Earnslaw for a trip across the lake to Walter Peak Farm where we saw some, er, farmy things including a sheep being sheared. Earnslaw is the most beautiful coal fired steam ship, launched in 1912 she has the same triple-expansion steam engines as fitted on Titanic – needless to say we kept our eyes open for icebergs…
After steaming back to town we caught the gondola to get a bird’s eye view of Queenstown and then back for dinner…
What an amazing place for buskers too!
Splendid!

NZ Day 32 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/UMDFN0JTU2LR5AhT2)
Today is the day!
Early breakfast in town and then off to the Nevis Swing ride! Organisation was (as we have found at all the events here) superb and the ride sensational…
Then, filled with adrenaline back to Queenstown a few beers by the harbour then dinner out – an exhausting and memorable day!

NZ Day 33 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/FpbEteDjeJ8uR4jt6)
Collected LL’s ickle sister and partner from the airport first thing then back to Queenstown, checked out of the hotel walked around the town then lunch.
Then off to Arrowtown where we booked into the amazing Millbrook golf resort, explored Arrowtown itself and then returned for dinner…
Attempted to capture some of the beautiful autumnal colours in the trees but technology (and crap photographer) just doesn’t really do it justice...

Old gold mining areas often are a bit grim. When they're active only one thing matters and when the gold runs out they go downhill from that for decades. Not sure modern gold mining is much better

Unique plug designs are a way of protecting local industry form imports. The Oz/NZ one is fine per se just awkwardly different. The USA one however is just plain stupid

Given that they run everything on 220V @ 50Hz then moulding a different plug on the cable is hardly an impenetrable barrier to competition... noooo:

Ah but that plug design for them has been around for decades. It was protectionist when they dreamt it up probably before you or I or even Samsung was a glint in anyone's eye
But once you've got a whole country wired like that you try changing it and getting re-elected

I've got Day 34 ready but the interwebz were shite earlier and it would have taken forever to upload... might have another go now...
So the camera lives despite it all happ096
Slow as a slow thing... ::)
So NZ South Island can be summed up as: Stunning scenery, crap interweb, expensive booze, amazing swings
Not entirely...
The last place had 90M down and 90M up... this place is about 5M down and 1M up but the up isn't consistent and Google images keeps giving up and moving on to the next one... evil:
...and we got some great Merlot in the supermarket earlier for $12.99... uc9:

We've had free 90M/90M almost everywhere (hence all the pics)...
The place at Franz Josef had a dodgy wireless link to the town and LL's Sister's partner has fibre but is as tight as a duck's underwater parts so only pays for something like 10/10 but even restaurants and bars have super high speed...
I think we pay €50 for 50/4 at home...

Dunedin
Beautiful weather again!
Early start and off across the bay to the beautifully restored Larnach Castle.
Then off to explore the middle of Dunedin, St. Paul’s Cathedral and then lunch. After lunch a quick (!) walk up Baldwin Street which is the world’s steepest residential street! Exhausting!
Lastly off to Dunedin Railway station which is surprisingly beautiful – they knew how to build them in those days!
Out to dinner tonight and then fly back to Auckland tomorrow…

What is the gradient of the street ? Gotta wonder why people wanna live on it if it is so inhospitable !!
Quote from: Mr. Google
A short straight street a little under 350 metres (1,150 ft) long, Baldwin Street runs east from the valley of the Lindsay Creek up the side of Signal Hill towards Opoho, rising from 30 m (98 ft) above sea level at its junction with North Road to 100 m (330 ft) above sea level at the top, an average slope of slightly more than 1:5. Its lower reaches are only moderately steep, and the surface is asphalt, but the upper reaches of this cul-de-sac are far steeper and surfaced in concrete (200 m or 660 ft long) for ease of maintenance (bitumen—in either chip seal or asphalt—would flow down the slope on a warm day) and for safety in Dunedin's frosty winters.
The 161.2-metre-long (529 ft) top section climbs 47.2 metres (155 ft) vertically, an average gradient of 1:3.41. At its maximum, about 70 metres (230 ft) from the top, the slope of Baldwin Street is about 1:2.86 (19° or 35%). That is, for every 2.86 metres travelled horizontally, the elevation changes by 1 metre.

The guns belonged to W.J.M. Larnach who built the place (using money from his Mrs.). He was a bit of a hunter/shooter/fisher and heavily into cock fighting too (even though it was illegal at the time). He killed himself.
Well, Dunedin comes from Důn Čideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh so there is a bit more relevance link than you might think...

We fly Dunedin to Auckland today (although the airport is so far out of the city the wrong way we may as well have driven to Christchirch)...
...then we fly out of Auckland Saturday evening, 17 hours direct to Dubai, two hours layover and fly to Larnaca Sunday.
All good things have to come to an end. But look on the bright side, you'll miss Eurovision
Oh noes! eeek:

It is a sensational museum...
The room with the portraits was divided into different years of arrival in Dunedin...
...they had touch screens with an image of each wall, and you clicked on the photo which allowed you to zoom in on the picture or get the history of the subject...

NZ Day 37 was a bit of local sightseeing and Musick Point
NZ Day 38 was a trip to Waiheke…
Up early to thick fog so not sure if we were going to make it (traffic delayed and some flights cancelled from Auckland Airport).
However, the fog cleared on the way to the ferry and we had a lovely crossing to Waiheke island. A quick explore of the lovely beaches, lunch and then the ferry back to Auckland.
Oh, and a bit of personalised number plate spotting on the way!

NZ Day 38 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/Wour3rSJhekHpHPL2)
NZ Day 37 was a bit of local sightseeing and Musick Point
NZ Day 38 was a trip to Waiheke…
Up early to thick fog so not sure if we were going to make it (traffic delayed and some flights cancelled from Auckland Airport).
However, the fog cleared on the way to the ferry and we had a lovely crossing to Waiheke island. A quick explore of the lovely beaches, lunch and then the ferry back to Auckland.
Oh, and a bit of personalised number plate spotting on the way!
A bumper dose

NZ Day 39 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/nC6VcVZhtjjGlyAw2)
Last full day!
A change in the wind brought P3 Orions from the nearby NZAF Whenuapai airbase training over the house which was excellent…
...but it also brought rain and low cloud.
Undeterred we made a quick trip to the West Coast stopping at the Arataki Visitor Centre and ended up at the amazing Piha Beach.
Weather was really only suitable for the surfers and fish and the potentially sensational views were somewhat muted by the weather - but definite places to include on the next trip!

It really has been great seeing these each day BM. And the NZ tourist board should make your their honorary ambassador

Thanks!
The P3s have all (according to Wikipedia) had wing and emissions upgrades... You wouldn't think so looking at the smoke...
They are seriously old. You were essentially looking at a militarised Lockheed Electra built in the mid 60s and as far as I can see they still have Allison engines. Over the years I worked on proposals for P3 upgrades and got to see a lot of the drawings and much of their insides is very basic - but it works mainly because it can loiter so effectively.
We even won one contract for the LRAACA (aka P7) new P3 build of the 1980s but the bastards we were fronting it through cut us out and how we laughed when the US Navy cancelled it
The NZ defence strategy can be summed up as "Ozzies will defend us but they and the yanks so need the intel we get them from our area they will never say no". So those intel sucking up P3s will likely still be flying when you and I are no more

NZ Day 40 (https://photos.app.goo.gl/xntKbmOjMuiADkV62)
Auckland to Larnaca – the last post!
Left Auckland in the rain, briefly stopped in Dubai where it was 35 with a sandstorm and ended up in Cyprus where the weather is a very pleasant 24 with sunshine.
We didn’t fly until 8:30 so we set out and looked at Crystal Mountain – an amazing collection of crystals and fossils. Somewhat bizarrely, the shop preceded the museum and having spent an hour in it we felt no need to pay extra to see even more!
Then off to ‘Carriages’ for lunch – a restaurant that is built around two old NZ railway carriages…
But then our time was up and we headed off to the airport… Flight left on time and seventeen hours later we were touching down in Dubai. Two hours later we were off again in a sandstorm that seemed to have got much worse! It was literally drifting across the runways and aircraft just disappeared into it! Even the Burj Khalifa could barely be seen through it…
Watched some good movies on the planes – The Post, Journeyman and Alfie!
The clouds cleared for some beautiful views of Egypt and then before we knew it Larnaca was in sight...
