Whale watching tomoz...

  was cancelled when we drove all the way there

Sea was (unusually) dead calm today - hoping for the same tomoz... 

Lets hope so but we'll need pics please

We won't be uploading them from this hotel...

Blenheim to Kaikoura

Splendid day again…

Left the hotel after breckers and headed off to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre (the P-40E is for sale, if anybody has a spare few millions lying around I could put a bid in for us... Oh, and my birthday is coming up too...).

The museum had the most amazing Stalingrad presentation – a 360 degree video show with commentary, simply amazing and incredibly moving...

After a few hours there we had the most wonderful drive South to Kaikoura… Sadly a camera (and amateur photographer) simply can’t capture the beauty of the scenery!

Checked into a lovely hotel on the shore front and headed into ‘town’ for  meal…

Whale watching tomorrow (although we have done a bit of that today too)...

Whale watching in Kaikoura (Whale heavy album!)

Drove into town and had breakfast the off Whale watching!

An amazing trip, the photos really don’t do it justice at all (the video is marginally better). It was so exciting when the crew spotted the first spout and then, right in front of us a mahoosive Sperm Whale!

Then they got a call on the radio to the location of a pod of Pilot Whales which we watched for some time before getting a call to a second Sperm Whale sighting!

So in all we saw: -

2 x Sperm Whales
1 x huge pod of Pilot Whales
Seals
Albetrosses

It was awesome! Bizarrely Kaikoura used to be a whaling port and now they still make the majority of their income from the whales but in a different way…

Then after landing we drove up the road to the local seal sanctuary to get up close and personal with the locals...

After that a jug of beer and some food in front of a roaring log fire to finish the day.

Oh, and then I spilt a bottle of red wine on the floor of the bedroom...

Not sure what the pile of stones was about, they were just sort of 'there'... I'm amazed that no little sprog had knocked them over...
