NZ Day 39

Last full day!

A change in the wind brought P3 Orions from the nearby NZAF Whenuapai airbase training over the house which was excellent…

...but it also brought rain and low cloud.

Undeterred we made a quick trip to the West Coast stopping at the Arataki Visitor Centre and ended up at the amazing Piha Beach.

Weather was really only suitable for the surfers and fish and the potentially sensational views were somewhat muted by the weather - but definite places to include on the next trip!
  just love watching aircraft like that and I see your run of supposed fluke good pics with that camera continues.  worthy:

I have really enjoyed piggy backing on your holiday with you. lol:

Thank you for taking the time to upload and share your pics  cloud9:
seconded

It really has been great seeing these each day BM.  And the NZ tourist board should make your their honorary ambassador

 happ096

Thanks!

The P3s have all (according to Wikipedia) had wing and emissions upgrades... You wouldn't think so looking at the smoke...

They are seriously old.  You were essentially looking at a militarised Lockheed Electra built in the mid 60s and as far as I can see they still have Allison engines.  Over the years I worked on proposals for P3 upgrades and got to see a lot of the drawings and much of their insides is very basic - but it works mainly because it can loiter so effectively.

We even won one contract for the LRAACA (aka P7) new P3 build of the 1980s but the bastards we were fronting it through cut us out and how we laughed when the US Navy cancelled it

The NZ defence strategy can be summed up as "Ozzies will defend us but they and the yanks so need the intel we get them from our area they will never say no".  So those intel sucking up P3s will likely still be flying when you and I are no more

Well, whatever, nevermind
