Title: Bizarre Things You Are Paying For
Post by: Barman on August 25, 2013, 07:52:45 AM
Quote from: Anna
The last time I worked out the value of One Drone - the amount the government can expect to rake in from one minimum wage worker in one year – it was £1,816.19.

That was at 2009 values. Let us roughly adjust for 2013 to £2,000 to make the calculation easy.

Which means that 10 drones have worked full time for a year to pay for – what exactly?

Erm, the storage charges on 40,000 mobile phones.

Why is the government storing 40,000 mobile phones?

Because they can’t sell them.

Why can’t they sell them?

Because they have all been retrieved from ‘orifice searches’.

Yes, 40,000 Dwayne’s and Mohammed’s and Kieran’s currently in prison have had their backsides x-rayed and been found to contain a mobile phone…(is this lowering the ring tone?)

And ten of you have had to work for an entire year to pay for the safe custody of a shed full of shitty Vodophones.

Quote
Ministers are supporting a Bill which would allow the destruction of the phones, with Jeremy Wright, the Prisons Minister, saying it was “totally unacceptable that prisons have had to pay for storing these items”.
Not half as unacceptable as taxpayers having to stump up the money to allow them to do so.

Clicky...  (http://www.annaraccoon.com/politics/bizarre-things-you-are-paying-for-number-279/)

I assume they are not smartphones....  noooo:

As for the main point of the article it will probably cost more to get the law changed.  Hmmmmm

Seriously ('tis the Commons) surely prisons already store inmates personal belonging which they get back at the end of their sentence. Just put the phone in the rest of the stuff. If they're "shitty" which I doubt, then tough.

Ban something and sneaky sods will always go and do it - I would.  The cost works out at about at about 6p per MoD employee per year and down to just 2p per employee this year.  I have heard of bigger outrages

Stephen Lovegrove is the permanent secretary at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, although when hearing him speak about his work one could sometimes be forgiven for mistaking him for, say, someone from Greenpeace.

Quote from: An Idiot...
...since 2010 £29bn has been invested in UK renewables creating around 30,000 jobs - up and down supply chains and across the UK – many in some of the most-deprived areas far from economic centres.

A million quid a fecking job!  cussing:

Twenty-nine billion quid pissed away on pointless 'renewables' while the country prints money to buy its own debts....  Banghead

Meanwhile here in Cyprus demand is 463MW and the contribution from windy millers is nothing, nil, nada.... precisely 0.0MW and has been all day.  noooo:

I've always believed that the crusade for wind farms has been 'helped' by backhanders and self interest. Tim Yeo is a good example of this, head of the commons climate committee while earning over £100k a year from green companies.

Perhaps this is a simplistic way of looking at things but if you are having to pay these companies to shut down because they are creating too much electricity doesn't it stand to reason that they weren't needed in the first place or at the very least shouldn't have been built until the national grid had been upgraded with increased storage capacity?  noooo:

Looking at the portrait its possible that this was a nude. If so then most if not all of the money paid would have gone towards giving the poor bastard who had to paint it therapy.  eeek:

The £10k cost average may be a 'pittance' compared to the total running costs of the government but lets not lie or misdirect here. You are still expecting the taxpayer to fork out for a vanity project that costs almost as much as some people earn in a year. And lets not forget that some of these rancid arrogant bastards were forking out for a hell of a lot more than that out of OUR taxes. Lets look at Bercow the poison dwarf for example - £22000 for the painting with a further £15000 for the frame including the creation of a fucking coat of arms. Its the 21st century for crying out loud, why the hell does that repellent worm need a bleeding coat of arms?

Now as it is blindingly obvious that you live in an ivory tower and have little or no idea about how people live in the real world I'll help you by putting that into perspective, the average salary for a newly qualified band 5 nurse is somewhere in the region of £21000. His vanity project would have almost paid for an entire years wage for 2 nurses, and that is a resource that our overworked health service desperately needs.

A pittance you say...

Another example of just how rancid corrupt and toxic the entire fucking system has become we say.  cussing:

Now if we are talking about a politician who has retired or died after spending their entire career going above and beyond trying to make a difference for their constituents and not troughing for whatever they could get then fair enough they have earned that privilege. But If it is one of our current crop of MP's want one of these vanity projects then they can fork out for them themselves, after all most of them would have kept their inflation busting pay rise regardless of the pretend outcry from our so called leaders.

All very wrong no doubt

But it seems this has been 1 sometimes 2 MPs per year since 1995.   That means over 630 MPs have never been so painted.

Make those that have pay for their vanity.    FWIW I'd pay good money to ensure no one ever painted me

Its just a thought but seeing as Abbot is 'supposedly' a public servant and public funds were used to pay for this vanity project if someone was to set up a campaign where people rang her to ask how she could justify wasting taxpayers money like that would it class as harassment?  rubschin:

I have to admit, as an experiment I'm half considering the E-petitions website, its a pretty safe bet that it could get at least 100k signatures especially if it's mentioned on Guido and related sites. I'm just wondering if it would make it into a commons debate or whether  it would be swept under the carpet.  rubschin:

Mind you if it did hit target and wasn't chosen for a debate there are one or two rabid newspapers that would probably enjoy the story..

Just a quick follow on to Rees-Mogg's 'pittance' comments, the money you have dismissed as not being important could have been used to get this woman treatment for the depleted uranium exposure she underwent while serving in Iraq. It is an absolute disgrace that her family has had to raise the money for treatment themselves while your friends and colleagues in their ivory towers enjoy their undeserved perks or do you believe that you are more deserving than those who stand in the thin red line.

Anyhoo back on topic...

So after the backlash about MP's sitting for taxpayer funded portraits Septic Clegg, no I'm sorry 'the house of commons', has decided that he deserves one as well. One question, just what in the name of holy hell have you done since making it into office to earn the right to one of these portraits. Hmm lets see, what have you been responsible for that has been a benefit to the UK...

So the foreign aid we send helps prevent global warming does it? How? Does it go towards developing an environmentally friendly space program? Has North Korea managed to clean up their pollution? Even if your argument had any merit its academic at the moment as there are thousands of people who have been affected by the floods that need access to gubberment funds and resources NOW which your colleages are grudgingly handing out. Here's a thought Eric, get off your fat pie munching arse and actually visit some of the communities that have been flooded instead of making inane comments from the safety of your office. If nothing else you could be a flood barrier or a float to get people to safety because you are obviously doing fuck all about getting the money needed to help these communities that your portfolio is responsible for.

Not sold on the cheap then and allowing the tax payer more in return for their original investment when the shares made 38% on day one? Those that were allowed to buy more made the same percentage return (excluding trading fees), but on a massive scale. Considering it was 'owned' by the public why did they have a cap on their entitlement?  rubschin:

Yep

And if it isn't claim the difference against taxable income and if you're on 40% tax the HMRC give you 2/3 of what you paid extra back.  I occasionally used to tell my employers when they tried to enforce standard class that if they wanted me to travel in my own time and work on the train then guess which class they'd be paying for.

You get to sit next to a better class of train fare dodger in First Class

You may want to brace yourself BM because this is starting to sound like a bad Barclaycard advert...

Breast enlargement on the NHS £4800
Botox treatment on the NHS £1500
Taxis because 'you are hated because the taxpayer paid for your enlargement' £6000 a year
Counselling on the NHS because you've been 'so traumatized' by the backlash
Apparently going to get £2500 worth of dental work done as you are pregnant (again funded by the taxpayer)
And now you will try to give up smoking as long as we pay for it?

Your attitude to taking the taxpayer for a ride.....................priceless.  cussing:

You claimed that you were making £1500 a night as an escort before getting pregnant from one of your punters so you can bloody well pay for it yourself. There are people who have a genuine need for treatment that have been turned away because people (and I use that description about as loosely as I can) like you have decided that their cosmetic wants are more important.

I had the misfortune of meeting your idol years ago and as little time as I have for her I'm petty sure that even she would look on you with nothing more than complete disgust.

They are coming out of the woodwork now, first five grand to have a nose job on the NHS now you want an extra three grand a year for botox treatment because your 'new found fame' is making you sweat. The only reason you have this so called fame is because you have almost bankrupted yourself having cosmetic surgery before expecting the taxpayer to fund the remaining treatments not to mention being a 'friend' of that other paragon of society White Dee.

Tell me this, why should you have what essentially amounts to vanity procedures while there are cases of children being denied operations that would allow them to walk becaise of lack of funds. If you want to make yourself look like your 'ideal man' then grow up, get a job that pays enough to cover the costs and stop sponging off the bloody taxpayer.  cussing:

While I don't condone violence, given your attackers comment I can quite understand the desire to smack the shite out of you for wasting NHS money you pretentious tossmonger.

Given how long it seems to be taking to get the new fighters ready I can see them thinking the cost of bolting the ski jump on for the 'short term' to be a viable expense.  noooo:

4 panes of glass need to be replaced in Portcullis House, shouldn't cost that much I hear you say. Well you may want to sit down for this one as the total cost is going to be in the region of £488k for temporary repairs with permanent ones likely to double that amount.

Given that almost half of the cost of the temporary fix is a 'consultation fee' I'm of the opinion that it is a case of backhanders and jobs for the boys rather than what is best for the taxpayer.  cussing:

We are living in a time of cutbacks where essential services are suffering due to a lack of funds, for example Devon and Cornwall Police are having to make officers redundant due to a £9 million cut in their budget in the next financial year. So why the hell are we still subsidising these privileged troughers in the House of Lords £2 million so that they can enjoy delicacies like 'Prawn and lobster meat folded into Avugar caviar' with 'lemon mayonnaise, with tomato and cucumber salsa and grilled baby gem lettuce' for just £10, 'Squid ink linguine, served with sautéed mixed shellfish, roasted red peppers coulis, mixed with lemon and flat leaf parsley topped with parmesan shavings' for £9 or  'grilled breast of guinea fowl, served with café au lait, sautéed kale and parsnip crisps' for £9.50 or a grilled minute steak for £10.

Quote
One peer even complained he would get a better-value breakfast for £36 at London's five-star Ritz Hotel.

Well here is a radical thought for you, fuck off down there instead of fleecing the taxpayer because you feel you are 'entitled to it'

We don't pay our taxes so that you can shamelessly stuff your faces with fine food at our bleedin' expense you shameless bastards and given the cash for honours scandal you can't even say that you have been chosen to represent the people.

How many nurses could you pay for each year for the cost of your dining habits? How many police officers?

And this is without taking into account the taxpayer funded cafeterias for MP's and their staff.

What did callmedave say at the start of the last government? "We are all in this together"

I'll believe that when I see MP's and Lords taking lunches in with them or going to Subway instead of taking the piss with taxpayers money that is sorely needed elsewhere.

I'm sorry but in the real world when an employee uses expenses to pay for a new computer or flash piece of kit they are not allowed to take it with them when they leave so why the fuck are our elected troughers able to do so and do to so just before they leave can only be described as blatantly defrauding the taxpayer.

An Essex council is at the centre of a political row after paying its chief executive £105,000 a year to run vital public services – from her home on the holiday island of Cyprus.
Jo-Anne Ireland emigrated to the sun-kissed Mediterranean isle in December, but has remained in her post through an arrangement lambasted as ‘bizarre beyond belief’ and an ‘absolute scandal’.
The 43-year-old is conducting business via email, phone calls and video conferences from her home 2,000 miles from Brentwood’s town hall – but critics say that is ‘not good enough’ for someone in charge of a £60 million-a-year budget.

The explanation is there in one word:  Brentwood.  When they built the A12 Brentwood by pass they worked out (probably correctly) there was no need to provide an exit to actually go into Brentwood.

So according to John Thurso moving away from Apple's products would be too expensive?? Just to clarify, you are saying that, for example, getting £150 android tablets instead would cost more than the £499 iPads?

Quote
'A move away from the Apple operating system (iOS) at this time would incur costs to change these processes.
'Members are able to access the intranet and intranet hosted services via their iPads, they are able to access and annotate committee papers and can download a number of Office apps to access any content held within Office 365.

Oh really? Well I suggest you actually check with Microsoft before you try and mislead the public about the costs involved as you can get office 365 on android and reduce costs dramatically. And as for accessing the intranet, ANY machine with a web browser can be configured to do that you gormless mouthbreathing arse, countless businesses use android tablets for secure internal web access without a single issue.  cussing:

£1 million wasted because those in charge want the trendy brand rather than getting the items that would be the best value for money for the taxpayer. Perhaps I'm being overly cynical here but I can't help but wonder if he personally is getting anything from Apple for making this choice.

So Sue Berelowitz, the child protection boss who not only  failed to raise the alarm about sexual abuse by Pakistani gangs but can arguably be accused of covering the whole thing up takes 'voluntary redundancy' and gets a £134k payout only to be given a new job the next day being paid £960 a day as a consultant in charge of the inquiry into abuse by a family she had been in charge of in her old role.

Quote
She caused controversy in 2012 when she wrote a report in the wake of high-profile abuse cases in Rochdale and Rotherham denying there was a growing number of Asian grooming gangs.

Despite finding that more than a quarter of perpetrators known to the authorities were Asian, Miss Berelowitz said there was no evidence to conclude that there was a particular issue with Asian gangs.

Instead, her report – branded ‘hysterical’ and ‘highly emotional’ – said simply that abuse is carried out by men of all backgrounds.

And I'm sure there isn't going to be any kind of conflict of interest at all during the proceedings.   Banghead

Quote
Oliver Berman, of the Office of the Children’s Commissioner, said: ‘Taking on Sue Berelowitz as a consultant for a limited number of days for a limited time to chair a highly sensitive inquiry into child sexual abuse linked to the family environment was allowable because of the importance and sensitivity of the work and because of Sue’s particular expertise in this area.’

The quango says that the move to offer redundancy will save it £164,000 a year.

Her particular expertise? If you wanted someone who was an expert in sticking their head in the sand and talking absolute bollocks about a hugely important and sensitive issue then yes you have found the ideal candidate. If on the other hand, you want to make sure that similar gross negligence is avoided in future without resorting to the standard government refrain of 'lessons will be learned' then you should get rid of her and get someone in who can be trusted do the job properly instead of putting her own agenda ahead of protecting vulnerable children.

And as for the redundancy offer saving £164k a year let's be honest, if it was a private company and someone had made that serious a cock up they would most likely be looking at dismissal for gross misconduct so don't you dare try and spin this as a money saving exercise you sycophantic cretin! However if you truly believe that you have made the correct choice then you can tell the families of the victims of her bias and ineptitude in person, I'm sure they will see your point of view and not have an urge to beat the living shite out of you.

An old schoolfriend of mind did something similar. Screwed up running Children's Services, got a £250K pay off and a £70K pension. He was 57. I said that he would be retiring. "I can't live on that!" he exclaimed. He now does interim work in Social Services on a similar day rate. They look after their own.

Yes, he is Labour.

The problem is in the payout decision not the rehiring on a day rate.  By paying people off to go quietly (and esp to be quiet about other incompetence/wrong doing in the dept) the shite has a clean record.  And so MUST be considered as a fair candidate for any day rate work.

The paying off of duds and dosgies practice was perfected by the police over many years, any chance of them investigating is slightly less likely than us finding the world really is flat

Your licence fee at work, 8 MP's but the BBC wants to send 200 staff to cover the Lib Dem conference. Something tells me that there will be more reporters than attendees in total.  noooo:

Is your issue the profile they are giving to a party that may end up in coalition before the next General election or the number of people it needs to generate as neutral a  view as possible of their conference?

Seems the BBC as we know it will be gone within the next 20 years.  With no benchmark to aim at then inevitably ITV and Sky news and current affairs coverage will go the way of the dire Fox and CNN news.  IMHO this will be a tragedy.

My issue is that they are using in insane amount of journalists and support staff to cover a conference where they are likely to outnumber the attendees, at the licence payers expense while at the same time bleating on about how they no longer have the money to 'continue the service as is'.

Follow the money is a popular retort. I’ve been chasing taxpayer’s money into some very odd corners.

I’m indebted to the National Secular Society for first alerting me to something quite mysterious. Those priests you occasionally see darting along hospital corridors, on their way to administer the last rites to some poor soul; the Iman arriving by taxi to make his incantations in your local hospital’s nice new Muslim prayer room,  the Vicar emerging from a chat with a lonely old lady at her bedside – I had imagined I was witnessing the true selflessness of their vocation, how they spent the hours over and above that required by the regular services in their church or mosque, an example of their dedication to the souls of their parish/whatever.

I had no idea that they too, were dipping heavily into the NHS funds! What business does the State, on behalf of taxpayers of all creeds and religions have, to subsidise the already wealthy religious organisations?

Heavily indeed! According to the Royal College of Nursing, there has been a reduction in nurse staffing of around 5,780 between May 2010 and June 2012 – yet hospital trusts continued to employ almost 500 hospital chaplains.

Twenty-nine million quid a year!  cussing:

I can't see why a request for a vicar on your death bed to tell you everything is going to be okay should be paid for by other taxpayers - including those who don't believe or believe in a different system...? Surely, the vicar should be paid from the subs you have contributed every week as a regular church goer or from your estate if you are a last minute convert...?

You could have a ridiculous scenario where somebody is denied taxpayer funded life extending drugs because NICE says they are unaffordable but is provided with a tax payer funded vicar when they die because of it....

 lol: both

We'll have to agree to disagree BM.  I will say that when my father died the very last thing on my mind was a priest but then I'm agnostic with little time for organised religions.  But a lot of people are religious and the practicality of that is it may be a lot cheaper for a hospital to guide them to a room with someone that can handle their emotions than have them getting in the way of medical staff

IIRC even our privately owned airports have faith rooms

It could be argued that compared to everything else the council has wasted money on or completely buggered up this is small fry but it's still little more than a bloody expensive vanity project. £180k to promote a language that only a couple of hundred people are fluent in.  Banghead

We have the 'Cornish National Liberation Army' (also known as inbred gormless fuckwits) down here. In a previous incarnation (An Gof) they burned down a hairdressers in Penzance years ago. An independant review of Sharia Law to see if it is fair to UK women

It will look at whether Sharia law - Islamic religious law - is compatible with UK laws and whether it is being "misused", Theresa May added.

Some Sharia councils had sought to "legitimise" forced marriage and issue unfair divorces to women, she said.

Legitimising forced marriages? Sounds like you have already answered your question Theresa.  Banghead

And here we go again. Midwifery students are being taught that trans patients, both ways, can give birth.  Banghead

I have nothing against the trans community, if you feel that having a sex change is the only way you can feel comfortable in your own skin the best of luck to you, but it is a cosmetic change only. There is no reproductive functionality in male to female and one of the first surgical procedures for female to male transition is a hysterectomy so unless something went drastically wrong with the procedure pregnancy is no longer possible  Banghead

Quote
The workbook also adds a trans person who has transition from female to male could give birth through a specially constructed penis.

WTF??

https://www.gbnews.uk/news/university-midwife-students-taught-to-care-for-men-giving-birth-through-their-penis/283839

Out of morbid curiosity since the article refers one on the Redux website I took a look and it had sections of the training documentation showing..

Male to female pregnancy? How the hell did you pass basic biology?   noooo:

This clearly isn't a typo or mistake as it would have been picked up in review long before being handed out to students.

https://reduxx.info/exclusive-midwifery-students-taught-how-to-care-for-males-giving-birth/

For years we have heard that the NHS is strapped for cash and staff and often see stories in the news about people who end up having to go overseas and fund their own treatment because life saving procedures or medication are not available due to cost but that isn't stopping wastage on stupid bullshit like midwifery care for a male to female trans 'birthing person' where the pregnancy ISN'T BIOLOGICALLY FUCKING POSSIBLE.  Banghead

For the cost of the 'research' and peer reviews, training seminars and other materials that would have gone into this for both teaching staff and qualified ward and community midwives how many doses of life saving medication could have been paid for?  Banghead

Small portions? Greedy bastards, you are already paying bugger all because taxpayers subsidises most of the cost of the restaurants and you are complaining about portion size at a time where even more families are having to resort to food banks to put food on the table? The average MP earns over £80k a year and the bars and restaurants cost the taxpayer millions, in 2021 alone the running costs hit £9.1million.

Here's a thought, if we have to have these taxpayer subsidised restaurants then lets have them catered by the companies that do so for the NHS with the exact same menu and portion sizes as you find in hospital.  cussing:
