Title: Yet another road trip with Nod
Post by: Nick on February 10, 2018, 04:45:17 PM
He has gone bonkers about Spain noooo:
Now that I have this job with paid holidays for the first time in 20 years I thought I might drive from Madrid to Galicia in May. Nod was like a kid, "Please sir, can I come too?"
So I have cobbled together an itinerary.
WHat can possibly go wrong?

You wouldn't have been the first person I've known not realise that there are multiple, completely separate entries for a name when programming a sat nag and end up heading towards the wrong one before getting lost on some random road in the middle of nowhere... noooo:

I fear that with Nod in tow this may have even more comedic possibilities noooo:
He has just texted to say he will be ready to go at 9 a.m.
The flight is at 3.00 noooo:
Amended for accuracy
As for Nod being ready 6 hours early it sounds like he is used to there being inexplicable calamities around you so has planned accordingly... rubschin:

We located the car in a local car park where the police have a locked pound and we paid 76 Euros to release it, which we thought could have been worse
Closer inspection of the paperwork reveals that we additionally owe the police a fine of 210 Euros. sad32: This we have decided to ignore and will wait and see if it catches up with us via the thieving hire company. We have decided to leave town pronto and head to Salamanca, so now we are technically on the run from the police. rubschin:

Did you sign the hire forms? If so then you've lost. It is however a regular scam by hire companies in Europe that are often just franchises very disconnected from the brand name and frankly hanging is too good for them

When they slide you the form and say "Sign here and here" putting a little cross next to the boxes, I usually oblige by putting a similar little cross in the box. One time in 3 they just stuff it in the folder without looking.

Car hire scam
Car hire was £51 quid for the week. This is, of course, nonsense, as they sting you for an additional £200 insurance to cover the "excess" Thwarted this by buying the excess insurance in UK for £14 ::) We arrive Madrid late, hot, in a hurry and take ages to find the car hire desk
Girl: Two of you? Me: Yes Girl: Luggage? Me: Yes Girl: The car you have chosen has no room for this much luggage [bollocks] Me: I will risk it Girl: You must not leave luggage visible in car in Spain. People break in. Me: I will risk it Girl: Not a good idea Me: SHow me the car!
Pause
Girl: Where are you going? Me: Avila and Salamanca
Girl: the car you have chosen will not go faster than 80 kph
By now I am fit to kill and sweating like a (stuck) pig
Girl: For just 15 Euros a day I can upgrade you to a more suitable vehicle Nod: Oh fuck, let's just do it
I was in no mood to argue so we bought the scam. The upgrade is fucking ENORMOUS, girl has earned a bonus and we are 100 EUros down cussing: cussing: cussing: cussing: cussing:

But seriously €15 a day ain't that much for an enormous car. IMHO never ever have a small rental car on holiday, they are always tiresome to drive, there are always issues with luggage and you miss the chance to really try out a vehicle you might want to buy back in real life.

Utter shambles.
Nod's carefully researched guided tour of the University of Salamanca foundered on his utter fucking inability to read maps Banghead Each fresh failure led to a suggestion that we stop to have a beer while we "regroup". This did not help. Eventually I used my phone app to get us to the start point where, with Nod explaining something about medieval libraries, we acquired a small group of Japanese Catholic nuns. One of their number started interpreting Nod's ramblings to the rest, apparently under the illusion that he was some sort of specialist tour guide eeek:
It was OK, until they started firing alarmingly detailed questions about 15th century canon law. Nod made up some mildly plausible answers before we fled to have more beer. I managed to find the frog on the university facade which will bring me luck, apparently ::)
I am going to need it, as tomorrow we are driving east for the day so that Nod can enlighten me about the ins and outs of the Peninsular War here:

A long day!! Nod is in charge of historical aspects of the trip and we had agreed that Ciudad Rodrigo, which I have been to before, is, as well as being a charming fortified town an interesting place to visit historically speaking. Nod had read up on the siege of 1812 and was highly excited ::)
He was navigating, which essentially meant looking at the GPS on my phone and issuing instructions. That did not go well noooo:
He was OK at reading the on screen directions but less good at letting me know roughly which direction we were heading by looking at the map. I got grumpy (we both had horrific hangovers).
Me: Can you give me some idea of the direction to head in? Him: I can't do two things at once! Me: You can't do one thing at once cussing: cussing: cussing:
Anyway we got there an Nod led the way to the main exhibit: the cannonball damage to the exterior of the cathedral. That was it!!
We had lunch and left. AN hour's drive each way to see some holes. Here! Thriling!!

We move on tomorrow and Nod volunteered to take out the rubbish, mainly wine bottles redface:
I pointed out the 4 large recycling bins on the opposite side of the road. He reappeared with the rubbish, declaring that the bins are all sealed. We went back down in the lift and I marched him to the OTHER SIDE of the bins where there were apertures for bottles, rubbish, cardboard and so on Banghead Banghead Banghead

OK. One for Miss D
I last came here 30 years ago, but had forgotten how stunning it is:
1. Sunny and warm with snowcapped mountains around 2. Fabulous (and cheap at 30 Euros) sort of boutique hotel bang in the centre 3. Beautiful Plaza Mayor with added cathedral 4. Astounding Roman viaduct (no mortar, held together by its own weight) 5. Medieval walls 6. Found fantastic little restaurant down a backstreet:
Lunch: Roast peppers stuffed with salt cod Perfectly cooked sirloin steak Choc truffle mousse with toasted almonds Bottle of wine Coffee
10 Euros Shocked:
Nod said his cod was perfect and tried Tiramisu for the first time
Went over the road to a delightful square and found a little bar wide open but unstaffed. Eventually restaurant owner appeared (it was his bar) and we ordered coffee and brandy. He gave that to us gratis Shocked:

Came back to Madrid the pretty way through the snowy mountains. Hairpin bends all the way up to 2000 metres. Nod nearly fainted. Returned the tank without any unpleasantness and straight through security. Nod got the body search point: point: (https://s7.postimg.cc/7rv4y6hyv/IMG_0949.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/7rv4y6hyv/)
Discussing his general incompetence over a "few" drinks last night redface: I asked him if he can ride a bike.
He can't.
His dad tried to teach him when he was 7 but he fell off and landed face first in a wabbit that had died of Myxomatosis.
His life seems to have been a series of such disasters.
