Title: Pipes wires and valves 'n stuff all suffering?
Post by: GROWLER on June 03, 2010, 01:01:35 PM
Is everything in here going slow and crashing regular, pages not loading properly and stuff, 'cus of this new wireless thingy that I've now got?
Up to 3 puters werkin' at the same time must put a lot of strain on the items in the thread title I'd have thought?  rubschin:

Three PCs shouldn't really affect it unless they are all downloading at the same time... If they are all being used simultaneously then yes, the speed is divided between all three...

Try switching the modem off and back on again...

That is switch it off and on again at the wall socket ~ DO NOT TOUCH THE RESET BUTTON 'cos if you do no PC/laptop or anything in the house will work until they have all been reconfigured to the new settings that the router will give itself IF YOU TOUCH THE RESET BUTTON!

I'm getting confuslicated again now.  ::)

I ALWAYS turn the puter and all associated bibs and bobs off at the socket when I go to me nest.
It saves electric apparently, according to a expert I was talking to last year. happy088

That's fine but don't touch the reset button!

BTW my late Father in Law, a highly intelligent man ~ industrial research chemist by trade ~ used to switch everything off at the sockets whenever they left the house. Mind you he also switched on the burglar alarm and then turned off the socket that fed it so it ran on batteries only whilst they were out ..... not popular with the neighbours.

He would also not switch on the ansaphone in case burglars rang to check the house was empty and on getting the ansaphone realise that they had a clear path to the family heirlooms.

Like I may have mentioned a highly intelligent chap but well short of common sense.

Very wise to, it can be nasty if you get an electricity leak while you are out and come back with wet feet or whatever.  noooo:

I've had to reboot my modem/router several times in the past couple of days.  rubschin: Last time that happened it turned out to be the ISP (Orange) fiddling around with the service.

Froggy jokes apart I switched away from Orange for both broadband and mobile 'phones because they were so unreliable and never ever had any answer other than "It is your local exchange". One operative told me that the slowness of my connection was due entirely to the distance between my property and the exchange ..... 25 yards .... I can not only see it but could break its windows with a stone thrown from my front doorstep. ::)

Post by: Uncle Mort on June 07, 2010, 05:39:57 AM
Playing up again last night, couldn't keep a connection for more than a few minutes at a time. I tried calling Orange but they were "experiencing unusually high volumes of callers" and I wasn't prepared to hang on. Allegedly they are a 24hour service but this morning the service says it opens at 7am.

Working OK at the moment after a re-power (not a reset of course)
Title: Re: Pipes wires and valves 'n stuff all suffering?
Post by: Uncle Mort on June 07, 2010, 09:07:06 AM
Had a nice little chat with a girl at Orange, not french alas but a touch of the sub-continent instead. Anyway I told her I'd checked everything at my end and I felt sure the problem was with connectivity on the line. They're going to check and call me back later. I bet they blame BT.

Well I'm sick to the back teeth with this wireless thing.
It DOES NOT like 3 puters being switched on at once. Not even that good with just this one on tbh, but bearable.

I've had to log off and fire up again about 10 times in the last hour due to loading problems, freezing, and crashing. crash:

It IS actually making me 'ratty', hard to believe I know, but true. ::)

Is your PC wireless too or are you, like me, connected via an ethernet cable to the router thus leaving others with their laptops the wireless bit and its problems? That way I don't get the outages that they suffer.
ALSO it is a fact that the service does get bloody awful in the earlier part of the evenings when all the kids come home, have tea and log on throughout the village. Even my direct connection slows down. If yours is anything like mine as soon as Dr Who comes on matters improve and if there is nowt on the telly then it is slow going until after ten when it all picks up again.

I'm all connected in the 'normal' way. They're all remote.
I've neer known it as bad as it is now though.

Strange how I can get on here at present, but not the Koptalk site that I frequently visit.

Same goes for some other sites. Some load great, others don't load at all for a while...unless I log off and fire up again, and then I noramlly get a small window of 5 minutes to get in there before the freezing and non loading starts again. Banghead

Anyway, my router/modem played up again this morning so I spoke to Orange. They said they had checked the line and (as expected) all was OK. Had a look on the internet and spoke to a real I.T. geeky anorak type. It's possible it's caused by the router getting overheated. As I had left it turned off on Sunday night and it was OK on Monday morning 'til now maybe that's the answer.

Growler, I know you said you switch off the kit overnight but maybe your router is overheating. It does seem a common problem from what I perused on the web.

OI! Kaarm down eh?

Even I know there is a pipe that comes in and another one that goes out. The Geeks might be able to tell you something useful if it showed which pipe(s) are blocked if you do that fish.net stuff they suggest.

Of course they will ramble on about who has the thickest pipe, but you expect that.

Now UM suggests you put a bag of frozen peas on it.

They are all trying in their own ways.

Wot he said.

TBH we would help if we could but we need more information.

Unfortunately, though he may walk funny, even BM doesn't have crystal balls so you need to tell us.

We need to know when it happens, if it is a regular occurrence (like at the same(ish) time of day), etc

If there is no pattern to it then I would suspect the router may need checking in case it is gubbed but if it has a pattern then it is almost certainly going to be either an overloaded and un-upgraded local exchange OR you are trying to run too many PCs and laptops off the one router and may need to upgrade that piece of equipment. Just how many routers, direct connections to PC and wireless connections are you running and how many telephone extensions are you running on the same line. Is your TV by any chance running down the same cable? All these things make a difference. If it is an occasional fault then it may be your ISP has problems .... who do you use, if it is BT then you should have few problems but some others are not so good at running three phone extensions + a wireless router and need a gadget to prevent "interference" when all are running. Are the laptops using USB adaptors or do they include an in-build wireless connection? All these things can make a difference and you haven't told us what your set up is ~ only that it sometimes lets you down

BUT if you won't even share the speed (as demonstrated by many and it is FREE) we can't even see if your equipment is performing properly or not. Using Uncle's excellent link you could run a check at different times of the day and evening and perhaps that might point to a likely answer. Not willy waving - simply looking for possible faults

Shouting that it is "not werking properly ...... sometimes" and saying that we are not taking you seriously are actually bloody useless comments to make  because we are trying to help but without the other information that we have asked for we can't even guess.

So you are not talking to yourself but you are not telling us what we need to know to be able to offer advice and when we do suggest something you run a mile. Nobody expects you to be a techno whizz ~ Christ alone knows I'm know very little about how these things work but I can tell you what problems I have encountered and how they were solved.

Consider yourself bollocked!

When I spoke to Orange yesterday they promised to ring during the day to update me. Did they f*** ! I called them, "why you no ring?" Answer "because we have a large number of incoming call and the supervisor banned calling back."

Anyway I'm to call them at 7:30pm to get the line checked during "peak time". Of course at the moment it's working OK  Banghead

Right, just finished talking to Orange @ 5p a minute (not too bad) escalated to level 2 (whoop-de-woo)

Only one drop out this evening (so far) but I've got them to send me a modem/router to see if that's the problem. I don't think so but let's see.

While I was waiting on the line I was perusing Orange's website and it seems the package I'm currently on includes a router. As I was with Freeserve and then Wanadoo before Orange I've always had my own kit. So I asked for them to send me one.

Current situation:

Connection getting worse, getting less than 0.1 Mbps when connected which ain't often. Received modem/router from Orange yesterday, installed it and got exactly the same problems. Speaking to Orange during the install agreed that there must be a line fault but that I had to ring back on a mobile because thay couldn't register a line fault report while I was on the line.  shrugs: I asked if that meant the line would be checked immediately. No it takes 48 ~ 72 hours  cussing: So why can't I report the line fault on the BT line rather than spend a fortune calling on a mobile? Anyway I call on my mobile, only problem is that I often don't get a signal in the house so I speak to them from the garden. I have to go in to check the status and the line drops  Banghead Finally get them to report a line fault.

This morning I call BT and report a line fault, there's a definite crackle on the line. BT won't send out an engineer unless I can confirm my phone's not at fault. I don't have spare so, keeping BT on the line, I go next door to see if I can borrow a phone. Get accosted by their dog but decide it's too much effort to get their phone disconnected so I leave it.

Have to do the school run and then a hospital visit so BT said they would ring back this afternoon to see if I've proved if the phone's at fault. I buy a phone at Argos for £4.95(!) and now I've proved that the line still crackles.

Rebooted modem/router and been working for some time now <fingers crossed> and will speak to BT later.

In the meantime another modem/router has turned up!

BT have agreed there is a fault and engineer coming out Saturday morning.

Let's see if I keep the connection when all the kiddies come out of school and logon.

Better post this quick.
Screen froze 5 times within the last 10 minutes, and I'm the only one on the net in the house at the moment too.
Only way of freeing it is to log off completely and start again.
This couldn't be anything to do with any of my neighbours picking up my signal on their wireless thingies could it, or am I just clutching at straws here?

Thought I'd share this with you:
Quote
We are now routing you to one of our chat team...
You are now connected with Kirsty

Kirsty: Hi, my name is Kirsty. I'm here to assist you with your BT order.

Uncle Mort:
hi Kirsty, I'm looking to change to BT from Orange but when I check my broadband speed I get 256Kbps I currently get 6.5Mbps

Kirsty: BT always give you the best speed possible on your line. The speed prediction we have given here is an estimate. The actual speed is dependent on several factors such as whether you have internal wiring, our network management policy and the number of people using the internet at the same time.

Uncle Mort: Right, I read that but if I currently get 6.5Mbps through the BT line with Orange as my ISP why should I change if you don't even appear to give the same. It must be a mistake.

Kirsty: Every provider will always give the up to speed that they provide , it does not mean you are getting the exact speed , the speed on your line is not accurate Mort . sometimes it is higher and sometimes lower

Kirsty: Bt will always tell you the truth and also show the estimated speed on your line at a moment

Kirsty: Once your a BT Broadband customer you'll be able to claim your free BT Accelerator. This plugs onto your phone socket and can enhance your speed by up to 1.5MB per second!

Uncle Mort: sorry but you don't seem to understand. The line is obviously capable of allowing over 6Mbps as that is what I get at best. So why doesn't the BT test reflect that instead of showing a maximum of 256Kbps?

Uncle Mort: I cannot sign an agreement showing 256Kbps as best speed.

Uncle Mort: Hello?

Kirsty: I am here , I thought you were still typing

Kirsty: Bt will always try as much as possible to provide the highest speed on your line Mort , if your speed is too long , you will be able to use the BT accelerator and it will boost the speed on your line

Uncle Mort: But as I say, BT show a max speed that is too low. If I sign up there is no obligation for BT to provide better. This morning on that line I got a speed of 6.5Mbps so the BT test must be wrong. Is there a technical department I can call?

Kirsty:
Sure , you can contact our technical team on 0800 111 4567 they will be happy to assist you

Uncle Mort: Thank you - bye

Kirsty: Thank you for chatting with me today, BT Values your feedback. Please click the "Close" button at top right to close the chat.
Thank you for chatting with us.

I have now spoken to Tanya, After some head scratching she's gone off to talk to some techies and will call me back.

Don't panic Mort, normally BT can't take over your broadband without the MAC code. If they do its classed as a slam, all you need to do is contact Orange and tell them to get the broadband reset again.

The accelerator is just a more advanced microfilter than you currently have.

I've got the MAC number and I'm just touting it around the ISP companies.
