Title: Digi doin' me 'ed in.
Post by: GROWLER on November 19, 2009, 09:05:32 PM
I'm fedup with this. It's just a money making scam. cussing:

From next month, I won't be able to record owt whilst watching another channel cus I've just got a Freeview box, albeit an expensive one with a built in VCR and DVD player/recorder.
Is this supposed to be progress?  noooo:

It seems going over to Virgin or Sky is going to be the only option now unfortunately.
Suggestions for the bestest low cost options please, and which is best of the above two?

Only got a bog standard tv btw.

If you don't want to subscribe to cable / sky etc have you considered one of these ?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-PVR9300T-320GB-Twin-Tuner/dp/B00272N9PC (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-PVR9300T-320GB-Twin-Tuner/dp/B00272N9PC)

Freeview, records programs / series of prgrams , playback etc.

There is a smaller sized one at 160 GB that will prolly cost just over ?100  and then that's it a one off payment and no more

Interesting. Didn't know such things existed tbh.

Installation is simple, just plug in and play.

Words are cheap. I've never mastered the DVD recorder here. It lies there virtually unused. ::)

No honestly really is a doddle to set up. I set one up for a friend who is a complete technophobe and was no probs and really easy to use.

I'll certainly consider it. I'll read some of the customer reviews and ask the Growlers for their opinions, as this really isn't my territory.  redface:

Something has to be done though.

Keep getting bombarded by mail shots from Virgin. Cable has been laid apparently,
Fiver a month providing you take on their telephone line thing for ?12pm, and a man comes 'round to set it up apparently.

I dunno. I'm bamboozled.  confused:
Don't need all this. I luv anaoluge. sad32:

Managed to watch the remainder of last nights Mars documentary on that BBC i player thing on here, so that's progress I suppose!  whistle:

Who me...?

1) You have no choice but to go digital
2) You can choose Sky, Freeview, cable or freesat

Cheapest option is prolly Freeview and the PVR that Miss D linked to looks excellent.

Unfortunately I have no choice here but Greek TV, Arabic satellite or Sky.

Got freeview, but imo it's shite. Can't record another channel if you're watching summat else.

I'm repeatin' meself 'ere. ::)

Quote
Digital set-top box with Freeview+ - enables simultaneous viewing of one channel and recording another channel

You may well find the tuner in the Humax is better than your existing one... or even the Humax with a new antenna will prove the best option.

The problem with Sky (and I suspect Virgin) is that you have to sign up for a long period and getting out of it is a nightmare.

You might also want to consider BT Broadband which also offers telly and recording abilities...

As I say, my advice would prolly be Freeview with a PVR unless you want to pay out ?22 per month for the minimum Sky subscription...

The same programmes are shown on all channels but Sky and Virgin cable do offer the chance to buy more channels. As for recording a channel whilst watching different one that problem is common to all digital receivers UNLESS you pay for a different type of recorder than the one you have. Digital broadcasts can be recorded only by selecting the channel at the decoder which means you either need to watch it or watch nothing whilst recording unless you have a more expensive, specialised recorder that can decode and record another channel whilst you watch something else. I have Freesat in one room and Freeview in another. There is little to choose between them in either set up or operating cost and the content is the same as I do not pay for additional channels. The recording of either can be (and is here) done with a VHS recorder or a DVD recorder ~ or with the sort of thing that Miss D suggested, which I have thus far avoided to prevent even more arguments about who wants to watch what.
Miss D's option will permit you to watch one channel whilst recording another.
All suppliers that you have to pay for content from insist on a minimum 18 month contract. Sky, BT and Virgin all want a hefty sum every month but they still show the same programmes.

To say nothing of losing analogue radio in a few years time too.

I'm trying to figure out what DAB+ is  rubschin:

An upgraded version of the DAB system was released in February 2007, which is called DAB+. DAB is not forward compatible with DAB+, which means that DAB-only receivers will not be able to receive DAB+ broadcasts. DAB+ is approximately twice as efficient as DAB due to the adoption of the AAC+ audio codec, and DAB+ can provide high quality audio with as low as 64kbit/s. Reception quality will also be more robust on DAB+ than on DAB due to the addition of Reed-Solomon error correction coding.

Australia, Italy, Malta and Switzerland have started transmitting DAB+ stations. Hungary is due to launch DAB+ stations in 2008 and Germany is planning to launch DAB+ in 2009. The radio industry in the UK is expecting DAB+ stations to launch between 2010 and 2013.

But I know nothing technical ~ ask anyone, they'll tell you  ::)

Hmmm. Yes.

And what's the reach of DAB, DAB+ ?  E.g. does it "drop off" off shore like FM which is why they use LW for shipping forecasts etc?

Car radios; that's another one I was thinking about  noooo:. Plus, there's the FM radio on me phone, although the chances of me having the same phone in 6 years time is slim.

I'd heard somewhere that rather than FM for example being axed it'll be used for local stations which, round here means it's going to be bubble 'n' squeakFM, PolskiFM, RastaFM, the local gangFM, etcFM .... and so on  ::)

If you don't want to subscribe to cable / sky etc have you considered one of these ?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-PVR9300T-320GB-Twin-Tuner/dp/B00272N9PC (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Humax-PVR9300T-320GB-Twin-Tuner/dp/B00272N9PC)

Freeview, records programs / series of prgrams , playback etc.

There is a smaller sized one at 160 GB that will prolly cost just over ?100  and then that's it a one off payment and no more

Had a sniff at some that the Asda are selling last night.

Sagem.
Seem to get fairly good customer reviews, albeit some complain that they are a bit noisy.
Maplin are selling recon. units for about ?50.

The only advantages of getting one of these, is that you can record ....like we virtually used to be able to do ::)
Please tell me pray WHY the bloody hell you'd want the feature of being able to watch 2 programmes at the same time?
I can just imagine me wanting to watch a programme about my colleauges on the polar ice cap whilst Mrs G and the Mini Moose are wanting to watch Corry on a split screen.
HOW TF does THAT werk then ey, go on, tell me, cus I'm totally bollxed if I can werk it out chief, and that's just watching it!
What about sound ffs?!! noooo:

I'm extremely pissed off about all this. The manufacturers have been very clever, stitching us all up with these crappy freeview boxes, and now doing the same with the + boxes, rancid scheming money grabbing gets. cussing:

The real advatntage of having two tuners is that you can watch one programme while recording another....

On the Sky box (and probably on others) you can record two programmes (as it has two tuners) while watching a third that you have previously recorded. You can also 'series link' where it records an entire series of programmes even if they are delayed by a party political broadcast or the snooker running late...

Also, you can pause live TV - if the phone rings, just hit pause, the screen freezes and you can rsume from where you are when you are ready.

And of course you can zoom through the adverts on recorded programs.

Exactly ....no monthly subs

records TV ( on a hard drive - no DVD's or video tapes required )

lets you watch another program whilst recording

Gives you your freeview channels

easy to use

The Mooses will be happy

no need for dish

The least disruptive and prolly more cost effective option if you don't want to have to spend on minimum subscription to other providers

But whadda I know  lol:

Seems fairly quiet to me when I am at my mates house and works in exactly the same way as a Sky + box works

I personally have a Sky plus  box and am considering upgrading to a HD box but am just waiting until after Christmas for the package price to fall .

I got Sky years and years ago but there are so many more choices these days as you are finding to your frustration.

If I didn't have to I wouldn't commit myself to a contract with anyone as unless you are into Sports or the latest Films the Freeview channels and the main channels are the ones that are mostly watched in this household

As for the Discovery Channel I think you will need Sky to get that and basic Sky packages start at around ?19 a month

It'll no doubt become compulsary to have one soon. ::)

What am I going to do with this rather expensive panasonic freeview, video player/recorder, DVD player recorder then in 2 weeks time, and WHY didn't the bastards that sold it to me three years ago tell me that it was going to be virtually useless from Dec.'09, ey, WHY?!

Don't bother answering that last bit, as I now know the answer, you thieving con merchant bunch of evil bastards. Explode:

Of course not...  noooo:

Snoopy won't recommend anything he hasn't got himself is all...  whistle:

As for the other thing... well, you can still use it to play DVDs - there will be a connector on the back of the PVR or the telly (a SCART connector ) which you can use for that purpose...

Calm down darling bear  it is not worth losing your fur over  happy100

You need to buy a new box to get digital TV

You have a number of choices all with pro's and cons

If you don't want to sign on a dotted line and commit yourslef to 18 months minimum you will at the very least need to get a new digibox thingy

There are some now that do exactly the same as sky + box but with only access to the Freeview channels or you can just get a basic box but this will not allow you to record and watch other channels which you have suggested has been a problem before

Your old box can still be used to watch VCR's and DVD's but you will need to add more scart sockets to the back of your TV instead of having to rejig it every time you want to use it

The choice and cost of a new box is down to you  and if you want to buy it from a shop Argos do the one I am suggesting

Am I to assume that it was the BIG analouge switch off today then, cus there's been absolutely diddly squat about it on the news. rubschin:

Comes home tonight to find all the analouge channels have now gone. evil:
By randomly pressing all the buttons on the remote for 10 minutes, I miraculously managed to get the digi box to retune itself! eeek:
BBC NW is now on channel 802 though, and all the othet regional stuff is in the 8 hundreds too.

BBC Taff Sheeps Today is now on channel 1, and the same for the others up to 5. Banghead

Any'ow, how can this all be classed as progress, when you can't record a programme unless you're watching it? Also you've now got to have both yer telly and digi box on at the same time.

You can plug in as many as you like - worry not like....  noooo:

Won't they sort of 'compete' with each other like, BEARing in mind one's a plus box now and the other one isn't?

The big switch on commences in less than 10 minutes. scared2:
No.

You've prolly discovered by now you can choose which input the telly displays....

Dunno. Rarely watch it tbh. Endless repeats of utter shite HAVE to be watched by Moose's, as well as the current offerings of similar durge.
Only really bought it for them, being the big softie that I am. Very little advantage or benefit for me

I've now got me own telly with a built in tape player, so I can watch all me oldies, like Fawlty Towers, Porridge, and stuff, and I can lie in me nest watching it too!  cloud9:
Got absolutely loads of old tapes to watch from the good old days when telly showed proper analouge programmes of quality. cloud9:

I'm with you. I have digi boxes on both TVs. They take so long to catch up with a channel change that I think they have failed and I am pushing buttons like mad and bellowing for new batteries for the remote. But it's what we have to live with because you just can't buy anything else these days.
