Sports Day
« on: June 22, 2007, 03:12:10 PM »
What the F*** is that all about?

Sports Days are a total and utter waste of time.

I started school in 1951 and have since that time have hated Sports Days with all of my being.
None of my five children has ever enjoyed a Sports Day and everyone of them has pulled every trick in the book to avoid them. For my part, as a parent, I refuse to endorse them with my presence.
Sports Days are a torture to the children, to the parents who do attend (and many who don't because they are at work etc) and to the teaching staff.
Why bother?

And don't give me that shite about competition being good for the children and/or that the children enjoy them because the vast majority do not permit winners and losers so there is no competition and the children themselves feel demeaned, embarrassed and condescended to by the whole performance.

Schools the length and breadth are currently "rehearsing" the children for sports days, running heats etc to determine who will win "on the day" so the day itself is a farcical waste of time that runs through several weeks when the children could be learning something like reading or writing.

The Children already know who is the best runner, best jumper, best fighter etc. They don't want grown-up interference and false rules to decide these things and they certainly don't want the embarrassment of watching their mothers hitch up their skirts to run bare foot up the sports field or their fathers have heart attacks by attempting to run a hundred yards without a bus to catch.

My sons were horrified that one mother who entered last year's Mums Race turned up in a track suit, stripped down to shorts and vest for the run and then pulled a pair of spikes out of her handbag. Her child was new to the school and she was clearly a "professional" who could not let herself down by failing to win. The poor child has had the p*ss taken ever since but the mother is unrepentant and plans to do the same again. Little does she know she will be running against herself as every other Mum has sworn not to be involved. I feel sorry for her child but honestly ..... some people!

1951? Is that BC?  scared:
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.

Parents don't participate at our school, us catholics don't believe in the 3 leg theory ( although I did once see a film starring a black fella called " King Dong " who had 3 legs )

Sports Day for me is a waste of sitting for an hour waiting for our lads race, only to see him thump the nearest kid that beats him

The headmistress then goes around asking us to " donate " money for the school, I usually disappear to the toilet at that time.

I saw that film ... I remember thinking if you put a camera on his head he'd make a good tripod. ;)

How do you stand on District Sports day. Ms TMR (junior) recently won the 200 metres final and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will quiz her on the relative merits of the school sports day.

To be fair I have nothing against people who wish to participate in sports/athletics etc. In my day I represented my school at Cross Country and whilst in the RAF Boxed, Fenced and played Rugby.

What I object to is the whole falseness of School sports days and the enforced participation of children who would rather not be involved. When my children complain of head/tummy aches on that day their excuse notes are already written and on my desk.

I wouldn't have thought Cross Country was encouraged at Borstal?

I thought that was what stopped the practice.

Almost autobiographical old boy.

Though my time giving Her Majesty some pleasure came during my RAF days.

Mrs TMR represented Berkshire (which apparently is a county) in the Javelin, hence my reticence at questioning the way she drives. And I still not dare ask to stop for a pee.

The only redeeming part is the mothers race.  Either grim determination or rolling about laughing (the 2nd one is me) although the first lot are the funniest.

I've tried the dodgy ankle, the virus, the sore knee so running (no pun intended) out of excuses!

Give me the face painting activity any day, I'd win that hands down. ;D

Mrs S uses the "I'm actually older than most of the mothers" excuse. That and the threat of death from the two boys if she dares embarrass them by entering.
