I 'spect their lawyers have advised that "Fraud" might lead them into trouble with the courts if this ever gets that far ~ though from the safety of Florida the "Red Tops" interviewing Mrs Canoeist are certainly creating enough ammunition for any defence barrister to be able to argue a case for dismissal of any charges that may be brought .... which may of course all be part of the plan. Devilish clever these canoeists ~ devious too.  whistle:

I have read this several times and still don't follow it. Please assist.

Confused of Tunbridge Wells

Did you watch HIGNFY last night? They dealt with your question and seemed agreed that Canoeist was indeed probably the best term to be used as any other description AT THIS TIME would either render the media liable to charges/court actions or be so long winded as to not fit the headlines. Merton, in particular, went into a lengthy rambling description of what the man could be called and came back to canoeist being the one most likely to be recognised by the public.

Meanwhile Mrs Darwin has fled Panama and is, apparently, enjoying the hospitality of a Florida hotel, courtesy of a UK Tabloid newspaper. where she is unburdening her soul to the eager journalists who are texting the copy back to the UK for publication. ~ See today's Daily Mirror, Sun, etc. No doubt the NOW will have it all tomorrow. Her revelations, now in the public domain, will surely provide any defence barrister, should Mr Darwin face charges, with many a legal argument about prejudiced juries, previous knowledge of the case by the aforementioned jurists etc etc etc. leading to a probable ruling that a fair trial is not possible or if one proceeds than they will use these arguments in their inevitable appeal.
I wonder if this is not a deliberate attempt by her to ensure (i) a continued flow of cash and (ii) to deflect or at least spoil any possible criminal proceedings against her and/or her husband. The newspapers, by carrying the stories from the USA, have presumably been assured by their lawyers that they are safe to conduct these interviews and publish them which would certainly not be the case were she in the UK at this time.

Either way you cut it Beagle, they are fraudsters and have taken money out of your pocket and mine. Lock 'em up and chuck away thr key.
Indeed... or send them to sea in a leaky canoe...
BTW While I'm on the subject...

Why did the air-sea rescue attempt to find him only cost £70K yet when the police shut the slip roads of a motorway junction the other day 'as an experiment' it cist£250K?

Err ~ Not out of my pocket they haven't .... if you are alluding to insurance fraud and the knock on effect of increased premiums for everyone ..... I don't have any insurance, can't buy it because of the heart condition. Yes anything is buyable if you have enough money ~ but I don't. I do have a file full of rejection letters from Insurance companies and brokers though ... enough to get a good start to the pyre when the time comes. smile:

Lock 'em up and throw away the key? ~ well yes but we both know that is not likely to happen.  whistle:

The 70K for the search came from your pocket and mine. The cost of the police inquiry and subsequent trial will come from your pocket and mine. The cost of insurance - you have a car and a house? I assume they are insured - is spread across all risks, not just the life insurance element. You can't get life insurance - and that cannot be nice - but everything else you have that is insured is affected.

Perhaps this thread should now be moved to the Commons?

Considering the unimaginable waste of my money on things that make me see red, I regard this case as good entertainment value.

Thank you DS ~ right on the button as usual.

The Commons?
No need to move anything ~ surely we can slip from humour into serious discussion and back without that?

TMR I know what you are saying but frankly mate if these arseholes weren't causing the Govt to spend money then I can assure you your taxes would not be lower and I have never, in my 60 years, seen an insurance premium reduce.
Take a leaf from DS's book and enjoy the show ~ you've paid for the ticket.

Thieves. Liars. Criminals. Burn them.

I will - of course - enjoy the show, as long as the finale is fitting...

And my premium for the motorbike, car and house + contents has gone down this year, possibly because of my age and possibly because of the success of the "Q match" system operated by all insurance companies, to reduce fraud. Possibly because of postcode - I cannot speak for the postcode of kennels in Wales :-)

He has, within the last hour, been charged with two offences.
1) Obtaining a money transfer by deception
2) Making an untrue statement to obtain a passport

The BBC are now referring to him (on the Radio 4 News at least) as "The Former Prison Officer who .... etc"
