Under the Dublin Regulation, which was adopted by the EU, asylum seekers must apply for asylum in the first country they enter. Asylum seekers holding a permit for one Schengen country were not typically permitted to move to another to file a new claim. If they did so, they may be returned to the first country.
And yet how large were the camps on the French coast back before we left the EU? This is just the latest iteration of established practice. The only difference is that the snivelling arsehole in No. 10 paid the French millions to carry on as before.
