I Love Amazon!
« on: February 18, 2015, 06:24:45 AM »
I buy loadsastuff from Amazon (yes, including popcorn seasoning ::))...

I find the whole thing incredibly efficient.... and for me here in Cyprus, faster and cheaper than trailing around every shop in Limassol or Pafos to find the one that has the bit you want...

Anyway, I digress...

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a new foil and blade for my 'lectrik razor (Apey take note).....

It arrived promptly, but after opening the doo-dah and examining it I realised that I had ordered the wrong one.... my (Braun) razor takes a different part depending on which year the razor was manufactured (each razor has the same part number ::))...

So, I clicked on my Amazon account, asked to return it (noting that it was my fault and that I had already opened it) and they instantly sent me a returns form and RMA label...

I re-packed in the original box and took it to the post office who charged me €1 to send it back to the UK.

Today, just a few days later, I got the refund....

Item Refund: £14.16
Item Tax Refund: £2.69
Shipping Refund: £5.40
Shipping Tax Refund: £1.02
Return Shipping Refund: £6.01

So, not only was the process quick and efficient, I actually made money on the return postage....  cloud9:

It makes you wonder how the gubberment can be so completely useless at IT when they have top notch firms like Amazon they could call on to do it for them...?

It also make you realise how much Amazon are making (tax free) when they can afford to run such a loss-making system.  ::)

Amazon are imho excellent esp when things go wrong.  So are Tesco BTW.

Can I throw the first stone at them for paying low taxes in Luxembourg when I will happily use duty free when I can?  noooo:

Well, whatever, nevermind

Not really Amazon's fault our tax system is hopelessly skewed towards sending jobs and profit overseas.

I like Amazon's telephone support system.  You click the link and someone calls you in seconds (from the USA usually)and they sort things.

Well, whatever, nevermind

Part of the problem is that they do use top notch firms for some of their IT requirements but either pay next to nothing or don't take into account that they are running rival systems themselves so may cut corners or provide a lower quality service in order to protect their own business. A good example of this is Universal Jobmatch which is run by Monster and according to the location match London, Bristol, Bournmouth, Glasgow, Sunderland, Manchester, Paris and Rome (to name a few) are all within a 20 mile radius of Falmouth Cornwall. If they can manage accurate searches by area on their own site, why not on that one.

There are other reasons why the comparison is wrong

Amazon etc can happily aim to just serve the customers they want, the government has to have systems that work with everybody.  It's staggering just how many more times difficult it is to take a system from working with 99% of the population to 99.999%

And then we have the eternal issue that Amazon etc have the freedom to use cost plus contracts for software design while the great righteous will scream blue murder should the government so contract.  SO they have to get a fixed price quote for a fixed specification and anyone that knows anything about IT knows that you can never ever ever get the specification right.  Result: loads and loads of expensive changes and the cause: well in a big part it's those great righteous.
Well, whatever, nevermind
