Boogs Poorly Car
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:31:05 AM »
My car seams to have developed a fault... When reversing I get a whining noise... (I know I've left myself open with that one) It's fine going forward.. Any ideas what it could be... rubschin:

Any advise would be appreciated  Thumbs:

Growler is likely to be the best expert but the interweb is very good as every fault you will ever have has happened to someone else before.  Just google <car model> whining in reverse

But I hate to say it but gearbox bearing comes to mind as that's just about the only item that does different things when in reverse

To help get better advice is it front or rear wheel or four wheel drive?

Well, whatever, nevermind

What he said.^^^

Bearing/s is the only logical answer.
Find a local gearbox repair specialist not a main rip off stealer or even 'Billy's back street repair sppecialists' either, as they invariably employ cheap to hire spotty yoofs who just break everything in my experiences. ::)

Does it whine as soon as you put it in reverse, or only once you start moving?

If the latter, it could be universal joints (cheaper). Our old pick-up did that.

I mostly despair

. . .It's front wheel drive...
If it'd been rear wheel drive then it might have been possible to work out where the noise was from to confirm/clear the gearbox.  But then it'd have been likely to be a Beemer = very expensive repairs

Has the googling of model + syptoms suggested anything?

Sounds like a plan

Doesn't sound like a slipping belt as they tend to whine forwards as well as reverse.  But on the other hand slipping belt is usually a cheap fix so hopefully . . . . .  . .
Well, whatever, nevermind
