Growler is likely to be the best expert but the interweb is very good as every fault you will ever have has happened to someone else before. Just google <car model> whining in reverseBut I hate to say it but gearbox bearing comes to mind as that's just about the only item that does different things when in reverseTo help get better advice is it front or rear wheel or four wheel drive?

Does it whine as soon as you put it in reverse, or only once you start moving?If the latter, it could be universal joints (cheaper). Our old pick-up did that.
