Title: Countdown to Canada
Post by: Nick on July 18, 2007, 10:39:40 AM
Off to effing Toronto on Monday morning. I have just heard that the airline we are going with has had a run of bad luck. Their London Toronto plane was struck by lightning the other day scared2: and passengers were stuck in Toronto for Four days while it was sorted out! eeek:

Naturally our trip will be uneventful confused:

The airline I discover is Scottish ( cussing:), so they are probably mean about buying spare aeroplanes. Nice word, aeroplane.

I have too much experience of Badger bombers already, thank you

We have a plague of wasps here now. The Boy, who was stung last year, has just raced into the house with his knees knocking.

EEEEEK

My sister was here on Monday and I foolishly kissed her goodbye. She has just e mailed to inform me that she has shingles!

Is it catching?

The blisters (vesicles) that develop as a result of shingles contain virus particles. The virus can be spread through direct contact with open blisters. A person who has shingles is contagious until the last blister has scabbed over.

If you have not had chickenpox before (usually young children), you can catch it from someone with shingles. However, you cannot catch shingles from someone with shingles because the virus has to be reactivated, rather than passed on. If you have had chickenpox in the past, you are immune and cannot get it again.

Pregnant women

Shingles during pregnancy can be serious. Therefore, if you are pregnant and have not had chickenpox, you should avoid contact with someone who has shingles. If you are pregnant and get shingles, your risk of getting pneumonia is increased. There is also a slight risk that if your unborn child is exposed to the herpes varicella-zoster virus, s/he may be damaged or miscarried. However, this is less likely with shingles than chickenpox.

Weak immune system

If you have a weak immune system, it is best to avoid close contact with someone with shingles. If you have a shingles rash, you should avoid sharing towels, going swimming, or playing contact sports, in order to avoid passing the virus on to someone who has not had chickenpox.

I think I have to go, but would rather have a couple of weeks peace and quiet here with the cat.

I am checking up on what shingles looks like and may buy some more paint and apply a rash to myself (not blue this time though)

You can only get shingles (Herpes Zoster) if you have previously had chickenpox. After having chickenpox the virus lies dormant in the nerves, and shingles occurs when it is revitalised in one particular nerve to the skin, thus explaining the way it affects a clearly demarcated band of skin only.

Have now located underground pool (you need an indoor as well as an outdoor), gymnasium, wine cellar. Servants made breakfast and then vanished. They live next door (in the teeny 5 bed house confused:)

Boy has found pinball machine and jukebox Banghead

Whole place hums like a spaceship and beeps occasionally. Lost Mrs Nick earlier and servant #3 advised use of internal telephone system to locate her! It worked too.

You will recall that the rellies are on their private island in the Bahamas. What is a Hedge FUnd anyway?

Just found the remote control for the waterfall! eeek:

I cannot imagine how much money these guys make!!

Have also located main computer suite which would disgrace most schools in England.

Oh, and it is raining!

You can tell that Captain Cataclysm has arrived in Canada:

Quote
A major oil pipeline has burst in a suburb of Vancouver, Canada, causing homes to be evacuated and threatening the city's port.
Witnesses described crude oil shooting out of the burst pipe. The oil then ran downhill and into an ocean inlet before the pipeline's flow was shut off.

A roadwork crew ruptured the pipe, said Derek Corrigan, the mayor of Burnaby.

Officials for the port of Vancouver said they were working to contain the spill away from the busy harbour.

At least 50 homes were evacuated as crude oil shot out of the burst pipe, raining down on houses and coating a road.

Environmental assessment

It is not yet known exactly how much oil has entered Burrard Inlet, but Mayor Corrigan said "thousands of litres" had been spilt.

Witnesses described a geyser of oil which lasted at least 20 minutes.

A spokesman for the pipe's owner, Kinder Morgan Canada, said the pipeline was adequately marked and it was the roadcrew's fault for digging into it.

The crew that dug into the line said it was improperly marked.

The pipeline carries crude oil from the province of Alberta to a storage and transfer facility on the shore of Burrard Inlet.

Afternoon traffic was disrupted with a major road connecting central Vancouver and the eastern suburbs closed and delays on a suburban rail line.

So Mrs Nick insists on driving us back from Niagara in some sort of Equal Opps mood.

I hand over the keys to the car (new, expensive and about the size of a Transit van).

She then reveals she has never driven an automatic before! eeek: She is determined not to be defeated. surrender: surrender:

We hopped through Niagara like a wallaby with hiccups with all of us screaming, and Mrs Nick saying things like "Why are there only TWO pedals?" and using both feet and scrabbling about in the well between the seats for the gear lever, and then yanking the steering column mounted lever all over hte shop.

And then we got on the Freeway. eeek: eeek: surrender: scared2: scared2: scared2:

I know what you mean ~ I live here and struggle with some place names.
A favourite of mine however is the "Fictional" Village invented for his famous Play for Radio "Under Milk Wood" where Dylan Thomas set the action in a place he called Llareggub.

64 quid per person per night is not cheap! eeek: For my family that would cost ?2240 for a week.

These things are, of course, relative. If you can afford it ~ then it is cheap. If you cannot then it is not.

It was 64 quid for all three of us you dummy!! That is the ROOM RATE. And since it was a SUnday night and Parliament was off on its hols (hence Ottawa empty) they chucked in free breakfast and valet car parking. You couldn't get that rate in Rhyl on a wet October weekend!! ::)

Screwed up tonight. Gotta phone call from some other cousins who were in the area and wished to drop by to see Mrs Nick and the rest of us. We said we would do a BBQ. Got some stuff and got to work. Mrs Nick said we should give them snacks when they arrived, so I hunted in cupboards and set out various interesting snacky nibbley things.

They tucked in and exclaimed how good and unusual they were.

When they left there was still some of this stuff left, so Mrs Nick said let's return the remains to the packets they came from. "In that cupboard, " I said. She went a - rummagin' and then emerged to reveal that we had fed them on dog biscuits eeek:

QUite tasty though

Groundhogs raised in captivity can be socialized relatively easily; however, their aggressive nature can pose problems. Errr hang on a moment, furry wolf like body? Snout resembling that of a wild boar? It sounds like it could be the Waheela or the Shunka Warakin. They are cryptids (believed to be extinct) the appearance matches the Shunka Warakin more but as far as I remember they were seen in the northern territories. They were more commonly known as Dire Wolves. Inuit legend refers to one called Amarok. It is reported to travel alone and not in packs as modern wolves tend to.
