Title: The All New cars I have Loved thread
Post by: Barman on January 31, 2013, 07:28:08 PM
Uncle’s post earlier made me think about the cars I have owned and loved…  cloud9:

So, here goes!  Thumbs:

My first car was obviously special – that new-found independence and leaving behind of public transport. I had an Austin 1300 – had my first shag in it too! it was a white Mk3
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs7.postimage.org%2Fxi3jzbk6v%2Faustin1300.jpg&hash=0dca37a8584022f2b5e0b4e4f6f053537d0d7201) (http://postimage.org/image/xi3jzbk6v/)

The Austin 1300 got quite bashed-up (not just the headlining) and suffered from numerous dents, scratches and badly bodged repairs. It was rusting so badly that I got a mate to give me an MoT over the telephone but he misheard me and I had to change a B to a V on the form so that I could get it taxed. Time to give the problems (and filler) to somebody else…

So I traded it for an Allegro just like this: -
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs18.postimage.org%2Fl93jxcyv9%2FAllegro.jpg&hash=a04258017061fb8655fd60a474400babdf687406) (http://postimage.org/image/l93jxcyv9/)

I loved that car! I kept it in pristine condition and polished the engine compartment. The only issues I had was after fitting electronic ignition it packed up. I towed it to the garage one night ‘for a service’ and picked it up the next day complete with points and condenser again…  evil:

My girlfriend's neighbour decide we were 'too noisy' one night and poured paint stripper all over the offside... I managed to make an invisible repair with dozens of coats of touch-up paint...  Thumbs: Sadly, the GF did not last as long....  noooo:

I sold the Allegro to me Mum and bought another!  lol:

After that and then came my first company car!
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs4.postimage.org%2Fxonmmj689%2Fcortina.jpg&hash=5e786e2d7755d77303b3ca0c073b59684b79bcd4) (http://postimage.org/image/xonmmj689/)

A MK4 Cortina 2.0 GL. It had been written off on the M4 and badly repaired so it went down the road sideways… I loved it tho...

The next company car was a Vauxhall Cavalier – again not new but it had a sunroof! My first car with one and it felt so important at the time… I took LL to the Lake District in it - our first holiday away together....  cloud9:
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs4.postimage.org%2F4vg414bih%2FVauxhall_Cavalier_II_Hatchback_Trinity.jpg&hash=4a5e424843e43fd42595ee260a7c47f9a05d1538) (http://postimage.org/image/4vg414bih/)

After that came my first brand new car – a 2-door Saab 900 followed up by a 5-door version of the same. Both enthralled me with sodium cooled exhaust valves, the most amazingly complex bonnet mechanism and pneumatically controlled heating and ventilation which hissed when you moved the knobs…
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs13.postimage.org%2F4eitrqer7%2F1990_saab_900_2_dr_s_hatchback_pic_4523849721727612992.jpg&hash=7ab02bab0063ee497c249d0f07910689a73f2e12) (http://postimage.org/image/4eitrqer7/)

The Saab 900 5-door was followed up by a Saab 9000S… I loved that car and still miss it – I had to give it back when I resigned and went off to start my own business in 1990.
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs4.postimage.org%2Fl24hhl5xl%2F1988_Saab_9000_2.jpg&hash=7989308c680b2570d19e01e19e70f72a7eba695d) (http://postimage.org/image/l24hhl5xl/)
 sad24:

I needed some wheels and bough an extremely high mileage Rover Sterling. It was knackered mechanically but had full leather, all the buttons (electric rear seats!) and looked the part! It had that counterbalanced V6 engine that you could balance a 50p on too (although why you should want to I still do not know to this day)…
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs14.postimage.org%2Ftbvuk0ejh%2F1916sterling3_large.jpg&hash=7e464bbc84e32cf7321379b15d4e4948047e21e0) (http://postimage.org/image/tbvuk0ejh/)

Business picked up and I traded the Sterling for THIS!  eveilgrin:
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs13.postimage.org%2Fniuir1l4j%2F1991_Mitsubishi_3000_GT.jpg&hash=261f2efdccfbc5727ed70e79488776b114d8cdb3) (http://postimage.org/image/niuir1l4j/)

A Mitsubishi 3000GT – what an awesome motor. Not good in the snow I seem to remember…  rubschin:

At about the same time I had some spare cash and bought a TR6 too – if ever there was a black hole into which you could pour cash then that was it – lovely car tho…
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs17.postimage.org%2Fcl200mpwr%2Fred_triumph_tr6.jpg&hash=cf707e4485a7d8f8481d8020ae34b3a6826bd5f5) (http://postimage.org/image/cl200mpwr/)

After the 3000GT I considered that I had matured somewhat and went for the jaguar XJR – the best car I have ever owned and driven – I felt like Mr. King driving it. When it started to show its age I bought another that looked exactly the same and moved the number plate over so that nobody ever knew I had a new car…  redface:
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs3.postimage.org%2F676m0u5fz%2FXJR002_B.jpg&hash=a3095fc9ffcb5da5f4f1a45cb3fefbf2d390093f) (http://postimage.org/image/676m0u5fz/)

And then I moved to Cyprus and bought the Pajero – the most incredible on and off road vehicle… Over 160,000Km on the clock and still driving like new (although I had to replace the front anti-roll bar bushes @ €50 each this week)...  evil:
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs17.postimage.org%2Fv7wbpbauj%2F2000_2002_Mitsubishi_Pajero_NM_Exceed_wagon_04.jpg&hash=354cb1d6a281d933b42d3952b1bd844cf534ecb3) (http://postimage.org/image/v7wbpbauj/)

It has been my faithful companion for over ten years - the longest I have ever owned a vehicle....  cloud9:

And after that Me-Mi – almost, but not quite full circle… the exact same engine as the first car I ever bought some 36 years ago...  lol:

TBH cars don't interest me that much. As long as they start and don't cause any problems that's fine by me.

First car - Fiat Strada (um - cheap, 4 (5 if you count the boot - perhaps Growler can advise on protocol) doors, did me good for 20,000 miles over two years)

First new car - Peugeot 306 Gti-6 (awesome but a bit fragile build wise, absolutely sound mechanically)

Current cars - Audi A3 2.0 TDI (efficient, comfy, fast enough, but a tad dull - being replaced soonish) and Volvo 940 Estate Classic 2.3LPT (not efficient, but good for many things and I like it)

In between - Mini clubman (part time), Vauxhall Cavalier, Mazda 323, Rover 825.

You have me trying to remember them all now.. Nostalgia  cloud9:

Ford prefect 493a

Ford Zodiac Mk3

Jaguar 3.8s

Ford Capri 3000E

Mercedes 450SLC (Those bills!  Shocked:)

A sequence of Range Rovers from 3.5 petrol  noooo:  Banghead to 4.4 diesel  cloud9: with a Landcruiser Amazon in the middle

We always have a pickup as well. For ages Landrover 110s then latterly Toyota Hiluxes.

I have omitted tractors, horse boxes and the motorbikes of my younger days.

My first car, which wasn't actually that far from this one in the condition stakes but in Primrose Yellow.
Next one was also yellow and in even worse condition and regulary got stopped by the scuffers for no tax,  bald tyres, speeding (just) and  motor vehicle construction act 1896 misdemeanours.
JUST managed to hold onto my licence with a quite eye watering 16 points accrued at one stage.

No, I don't know how either tbqh. noooo:

Hand painted the second one in shit green to get the rozzers of my scent, which actually worked for a while, and me mates path that we painted it on still has some stains on the path to show for it. lol:

Finally got shut at the auction for £15.

Finally got a job that paid enough for me to buy a half decent car in 1969 (Hillman Minx passion wagon with front bench seat for thigh fondling purposes) when I worked at the Vauxhall Motors plant down the road 'ere where they currently make the Astra, on the production line building Viva HB's

Liked it that much, I upgraded to the latest model a year later!

Left Vauxhalls due to terminal boredom, and  decided to go taxi'ing in it.

It was a shed however, and got shut after 4 weeks.

Swapped it at the main stealer I got the Minx from , for a brand new Marina 1.8 DE LUXE in the best colour, Teal Blue!! eeek:
I've still got a tin of spray paint from those days for it even now.
This one is the 1300 that had the cheapo grill, whereas as mine had the one bar grille. cloud9:
Used this to taxi in too, and did 115,000 miles in eighteen months in it.

It never actually let me down either.
Rozzers used to have the TC version that i lusted after but couldn't afford.

My dad had a couple... the last one was a 'Super'....  cloud9:

We used to paint it as a family project every other year - he bought bright green emulsion paint and mixed it with polyurethane varnish - made a lovely job!  lol:

I bet the shell was in one piece long after all the metal rusted away...

Very difficult to remember which cars I had tbh, as after I left the taxis I started buying to sell from the auction, but used them for my own use inbetween buying and selling.

I remember buying my mates modified Mini with a lift forward one piece fibreglass bonnet and wing conversion.
Dogs bollox it was, and went like hot snot! cloud9:

Bit of an owld minger of a shed that I got cheap from the auction.
Wolsley 1800.
Reason it was cheap was because the auto box was bodged for selling, but basically goosed. evil:

Other than that, quite a nice and extremely roomy motor.

My mate had the Vanden Plas version...

He left the road on a roundabout one night (pissed) and it had a huge dent in the side and the sills - it was alike a banana...  noooo:

we went all over the place in it tho - I presume he couldn't have got a MoT for it...  lol:

Polo mk1 estate type thing. Can't remember it's exact name now, but the version was affectionately called the 'Pygmy's Hearse' back then. lol:

Bought this one at the car auction for an amazingly low price.
Thought I'd scooped on a real bargain.

Used it for a few weeks and it was very good.

Eventually sold it and made several hundred snotters on it. cloud9:

Couple of months later the rozzers came knocking on my door asking me did I know it had been a write off prior to me selling it? eeek:
Don't know how or why thay got involved tbh, but never heard anymore about it.

£500 bought me this 2 year old Mk2 Cortina in this colour, AND it had a black vinyl roof too!! eeek:

Heard a noise outside me flat one night, and saw 4 scumbags getting into it...presumably unlocked it witha rusty knife. ::)

Raced down the stairs holering abuse and  waving a pair of milk bottles at them, and they all ran off in different directions. lol:

Rust ey?

Remember it well. Main reason for scrapping a car back then.

Now?

No rust, just far too expensive electrical problems to repair that far outweigh the value of most cars after a mere 6 -8 years of use.
Criminal the stuff you see in the breakers yards now.

Had to get a new tailgate for a Xantia four years ago, after my Jimny ran into the back of the one I had at the time, DON'T ask. redface:

Fouund one that appeared to be in pretty good nick tbh..
Asked the scrappie why it had been dragged in.

I t waasn't dragged in at all. Geezer drove it in and decided to part with it simply because it was going to cost over £800 to replace a leaky heater matrix. eeek:

Yes, hard to believe there will be any 'Classic' cars in the future - apart from Aston Martins and such like... far too complex for the average man in the street to repair and restore....

My first car was also an Austin 1300 - great car, but rust in the rear subframe eventually killed it. It was superb in the snow!

Then a white Mini 1275GT, bored out to 1340ish, LCB exhaust and annoyed neighbours. A bit of "enthusiastic driving" and a big tree in the road outside Windsor Davies' house killed that one  cry:

Then a 1980 Dolomite Sprint with twin Webber 45s and a Janspeed exhaust - at trackdays I would demolish Escort Turbos.

After that I had motorbikes but also inherited my dad's 1980 standard Dolomite Sprint in Brooklands Green. Really, really wished I'd kept that as it was totally original (apart from the rear spoiler) and they are fetching decent money these days.

I eventually got fed up getting drenched going to and from work on motorbikes (I had my first GSXR750 at the time) and bought a 1990 Rover Vitesse for £150. It died 3 years later (cambelt went) but it cost me a pittance in the interim.

And then I bought my big, blue Lexus GS300 which I have to this day. 8 years and all it has cost me is some tyres, brake pads and one rear brake light lamp. And the battery is STILL going (just) despite Snoopy's warning a couple of years ago  ;D

Staines?  Mustn't forget the apocryphal Seaman from Pugwash

Back on topic, my 39 years list to ridicule (why does this have a similar feel to listing all those young ladies we may have gained some favours from?)

1. Cortina Mk1 - my one true love in cars, if only it would start
2. Cortina Mk2 - so easy to repair, got so much practice
3. Cortina Mk3 - a dalliance best forgotten
4. Cortina Mk4 - 1st company car, reliable and boring as hell zzzzzzzzzzzz
5. Cavalier Mk2 - wasn't going to be seen dead in a Sierra, tried hard to be so in this
6. Cavalier Mk2 SRI - a whole 120 BHP!  A very good drive
7. Citroen BX GTi - fun, fast, just looked shite
8. Citroen BX 16V - seriously fast, seriousy flawed and still looked silly - stupidly I bought it from the company
9. Citreon Xantia Activa - bit underpowered but a stonking drive, drove it into the ground

and to my current drive

10 Mazda 3 MPS - 256BHP and can fit a washing machine in it when needed.  Best thing to come out of Hiroshima.  Needs 10 old lady muggings a year to pay for the insurance

Enough of my jallopies
. . . and bought the Pajero – the most incredible on and off road vehicle…  . . .
they are good, very very good, just one tiny flaw.  Ever seen the Spanish translation of that   happy001

In an absolute fit of madness, I put my hand up at the auction and ended up with one of these heaps of utter shite.

Caused me an absolute shed load of trouble and ended up losing over half of what i initially paid for it.

All seemed like such a great idea at the time too. redface:

You were lucky

I had two and yes quirky but feature rich and great for long distances

If yours were good I must have had a Vendredi afternoon one.  Air con leaked, it would self unlock at random setting the alarm off, would not start unless the wet string connected to the starter motor was damp but it finally got the red card when it decided to randomly set a 4000 rev limit when overtaking on country roads.  Merde, merde, merde I exclaimed or something like it.

The 'best' BX moment was outside a hotel sur le continent.

Had to park elsewhere and the hotel said don't worry, just stop in the police car bay when you want to pick your bags up.  So we did, went in and came out to see les Rozzers waiting for THEIR place.  And would the bastard car start?  Non.  So I got out my trusty hot wire, bypassed the wet string and hey presto we was up and going.  All in sight of les Rozzers

Whatever you've heard of French police, Luxembourg police are the best.

[boring list mode]  My complete list of my cars

1975 Ford Cortina Mark 1  - loved it when it would start, didn't last too long
1976 Ford Cortina Mark 2 - what a work horse once I'd sorted it
1981? Ford Cortina Mark 3 - brief stop gap, trashy
1981? Ford Cortina Mark 4 (company car) - very sound but dull
1983 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk 2 GL(company car) - ditto, first 1st hand car for me
1986 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 GLSi  (company car) - nice all round sporty saloon
1989? Citroen BX GTi (company car) - aircon at last, lovely car when its many flaws weren't showing
1992? Citroen BX 16V (company car, later mine) - again full of flaws but jeez did it go
1996 Citroen Xantia Activa - just amazing road handling but a bit gutless and thirsty, kept it nearly 11 years
2007 Mazda 3 MPS - bonkers fast and so easy to drive - kept it just over 10 years
2017 Merc AMG A45 - even more bonkers fast, very comfy, full of toys and well behaved when I am

(without her permission) Mrs K's car list

c 1972 Morris 1000 - I am led to believe it was the most wonderful car ever
c 1975 Mini - it was awful, everything went wrong on it and then even more after she sold it.  It ended up in the sea
1977 Vauxhall Viva - not bad at all, had a bad habit of others running into the back of it
1980 Vauxhall Victor - slow lumbering but survived so much even the cam belt breaking twice
1987 Sporty Renault 5 - excellent little machine, driven into the ground
1996 Citroen ZX - even better, amazing car went on and on.  Kept seeing it even after we sold it.  I managed to crash it  redface:
2004 Nissan X-Trail - brilliant car except for rubbish diesel engine
2008 Mazda CX-7 SUV - fastest 4x4 I've driven but an unfortunate drinking habit.  It had to go
2013 Nissan X-Trail - great car much better diesel.  I managed to hit a lamp post and another car with it  redface: redface:
2018 Rav 4 Hybrid - really good all round SUV except for an annoying bump in the boot.
