BMA warning as new doctors start
« on: August 01, 2007, 07:02:12 AM »

A "catalogue" of problems, including cancelled operations, is emerging as around 30,000 doctors take up new jobs, a union has warned.

Consultants have been unable to plan operating lists because they have had no idea which junior doctors will be on their team or what skills they will have, the British Medical Association (BMA) said.

To be fair they cannot be any worse than the bunch I was "teated by" on my last stay in Hospital. Arrogant, rude and so clearly defensive.
EG
Doc (Junior) "Why have you refused to take the medication I prescribed"
Me "Because it was prescribed to me seven years ago and I was allergic to it"
Doc: "There have been many advances in the last seven years"
Me "Does that make me less allergic to the medication you have prescribed?"
Doc "I am the doctor and I know what I am doing"
Me "How long have you been a doctor?"
Doc"That is none of your business"
Me "I think it is ~ now piss off and find a consultant who knows what he is doing"
Doc "How dare you speak to me like that"
Me "Just do as you are told"
Doctor walks off .... Staff nurse tells me "He has only been in the job for three weeks."
Consultant appears "Why are you being rude to my staff?"
Me "Because he is trying to kill me ~ read the notes written in 1999 by the Cardiology Consultant at XXX Hospital and see what happened last time that drug was administered"
Consultant reads back through notes "Oh!"
Me "Is there any chance you could explain to the trainee that most patients are (a) not stupid  (b) do know what has had a bad effect on them before" and (c) that he should listen to what patients are saying to him and take notice ~ that way he might learn something?"
Consultant "I expect he didn't like your attitude"
Me "And that is an excuse to administer a drug that could have killed me?"
Consultant "I assume you will be making a formal complaint?"
Me "You can bet your sweet f*cking life on it" evil:

PS It is worthy of note that it takes two years more training to become a vet than it does to qualify as a doctor. Now what does that tell you?

That their patients can't speak? ;)

Seriously though. I'm with The Dog on this one. It took me six years to be diagnosed with something I knew I had. None of them would listen. It wasn't until I burst into tears and refused to leave the office that a loccum decided maybe I did actually know what I was talking about.

Doctors are like mechanics or plumbers, they get basic training on the major faults like blown head gaskets or blocked U-bends but anything more complicated and they just prod and tinker at random with the tools they have.

Sometimes this fixes it, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it breaks something else.

The difference is:

The mechanic sucks hard on his teeth and says "Sorry mate its yer engine management computer, that'll be ?2000"

The doctor looks pale and says "Sorry Mrs Snoopy, we did everything we could . . ."

I trust Vets much more.

I mostly despair

As I have said before and will no doubt say again (but I cannot remember who made the original quote)

"The purpose of the medical profession is to occupy the patient whilst nature takes it's course"
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I wonder if it is because Vets have to be trained in ?death? as well as prolonging life? It never ceases to amaze me how some doctors insist on providing treatment to patients well after the battle has obviously been lost.

Well, no reports of of any deaths, problems or complaints. Shame, now we'll all have to find another way of knocking the NHS.

Of course not.
The new selection progress concentrates on the skills of covering up mistakes and saving money, not medical ability.

No problem there Uncle, if we can?t find any new ones we?ll revert to the filthy state of the wards, MRSA, etc.  ;)

Is that all? In Wales the waiting list is 10 months.

Apparently I was "fast tracked".  ::) God knows how long it would have been otherwise.

You and Wenchy are both wrong ? surely nobody has to wait on the NHS these days? Waiting lists are the shortest since 1837, etc.  ::)
