Certainly there are/were three fords across the river there but nobody knows for certain who Chandler was or if, as one theory has it, it was a meeting place for Chandlers. I have always assumed that the Chandler bit is a corruption of an older name now lost in the mists of time.
There has been much debate down the years as to whether there should be an apostrophe in the name somewhere but since no-one can agree if the land once belonged to someone called Chandler and thus the 's should be used or if the second theory is right it should be s' people generally leave it out.
