I can understand why NI and Income tax are to be merged, NI has been Income tax by another name for many years. It shouldn't be though, It's an insurance, a separate pot and gives contributers access to "free" health care and a pension. By effectively doing away with it there will be the opportunity to remove the heath and pension entitlement from selected groups.

I'd agree Uncle but frankly there has never been a separate pot for Nat Ins. It all goes into the same coffers. Balance what they raise in NI contributions against what they pay out on NHS & Pensions and the sums have not added up since the day the NHS came into being. The IDEA of a National Insurance scheme is good but the operation has never met the ideals it was sold on. Combine the two and you can cut operating costs (and yes jobs) enormously.

TBH the budget was pretty much as expected. Broadly it makes little difference to this household. We don't own a private jet, only I smoke and all my baccy comes from Spain at half the UK cost so no UK tax paid anyway, we drink very little alcohol and any savings on fuel will not be noticed given that as the kids get older we are finding ourselves running them out to various places far more often. Barely an evening goes by without some club or other for which we are the taxis.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.
