I still say they should have based the system on the shilling and the ten bob note.
No need to change any coins then ... Simply say that 10 pennies make a shilling instead of twelve thus 100 pennies would have been ten bob and everything else would have worked. Florins, half-crowns etc would all have stayed the same just been worth a few pennies less.

This came up in a conversation on Sunday. A chap pulled a 50p piece from his pocket and said "What do you call that?"
"Eh?" we said.
"It's called a Wilson. Two faced, a confusing number of sides, worth less than you were told and nobody effing wants it! That's what we reckoned in 1969."  razz:

Wilson was the one who forced the £1 to be the basis of the "new currency" just so that he could say "This doesn't mean that the pound in your pocket will be worth less".
A great many people argued for the shilling to be the basic unit but some felt it was "Too Austrian" ... I recall that some went so far as to suggest it smacked of Hitler.  ::)
The fear Wilson had was that an item previously costing a pound would be perceived as having doubled in price because the "New Pound" would in fact be worth half what the old one had been as the item price ticket would change from £1 to £2. Personally I don't think that many would have been so stupid but that was his thinking.

Also, he called the little 1p coin a 'Marcia' because it always rolled under his bed. (allegedly)
