How can I put this?
Tax Credits are the most convoluted set of welfare benefits ever devised. They seem to me to have been specifically designed to allow half trained officials free rein to interpret the rules as they see fit. I know well qualified Accountants who cannot understand the rules so what chance the rest of us? The answer, as with most "legal" dealing is to ensure that you keep full records of all correspondence, never send any letters other than by registered post. Recorded is not sufficient as the Royal Mail is not legally obliged to obtain a signature for recorded delivery ~ the postie is allowed to deliver the item and mark the receipt "Signature refused" ~ that cannot be done with Registered Post. Always ensure you get the name and department details of anyone who you speak to for advice (Revenue "Help Desks" are notorious for denying they ever said anything!) and keep a note of all 'phone conversation, preferably confirm them in writing and keep a copy. If possible ask all questions in a letter and never give them your 'phone number ~ that makes them write back and gives you evidence. Whenever possible have a witness with you at all interviews.
Other than that the best I can offer is, if you can afford it, keep as far away from the b@st@rds as you can.
