Site Problems
« on: July 17, 2007, 04:06:35 PM »
We?ve been experiencing some problems with the site disappearing for no apparent reason.

The techies have been working on it for weeks and have upgraded the server, changed the passwords done all sorts of stuff in fact which indicated that they don?t really know what the problem is?

I have a solution, albeit temporary in nature which should work ?til they can figure out what is really up.

Use this address instead of the normal.

http://www.move-to-cyprus.com/virtual-pub/SMF/index.php

I?ve just upgraded the front page of the pub to reflect this?

Hang on a minute . . . maybe I'm being thick or something, but, if you're having trouble accessing the site, how is posting an alternative address on the site you can't access going to help?

Perhaps it's the start of the melt down caused by the quote-a-thon in Mozo's 'Swan Song' thread?

For The Technical:
The site operates in a shared web space along with another domain. Although all the site and database pointers are aware of the file locations for some reason the site is unavailable thorough the main address ? www.virtual-pub.com

We?ve been working on it for weeks and have tried various fixes including re-building the site, moving to a new server and re-creating the database files on a new server (this morning).

This afternoon the site disappeared again and I tried accessing it via the true physical address (i.e. where the site files actually exist) rather than its virtual address and it worked fine.

Long term I can work with the techies at the ISP and the creators of the SMF software to see if there is a fix or a solution that would allow the site to be accessed form the virtual address but for now the ?fix? appears to solve the problem on a day-to-day basis.

OK?

For The Non-technical:
It just does.

Are you sure this isn't some sort of virtual problem, 'cos I've been accessing it www . virtual-pub . com all along (without the spaces before some wiseass jumps in) and I've had no problems at all!

Well, something has changed?

The good news is that the spelling check function now works and our new image hosting function now works (neither worked before as far as I could see) ? you can simply upload an image from your PC to our shared site and have it appear in a post.

Simply click on the ?Add image to post? link which appears underneath the message box when you create a new message or reply to an existing one.

Well done Barman, and I'd just care to add that this IS actually the same route I'd have taken if faced with the problem.
