The Soviet caff and other menu weirdness

Popped into the local caff yesterday and consulted the menu.

Me: Cheese omelette and chips please
Her: We don't serve chips with the omelette 
Me: But you do have chips?
Her: Yes
Me: Cheese omelette and a side order of chips please
Her: Can't do that
Me: 
Me: OK, steak and ale pie then
Her: With chips or mash?
Me: Chips
Then I decide to trick her

Me: I have changed my mind. Hold the steak and ale pie and give me an omelette instead - with chips   
Her: We don't serve chips with the omelette

I left

Could you not have just ordered them separately

I DID try to do that  She wouldn't let me

Yes but you asked for a side order...which is obviously not allowed 

How do you manage to find these places ?

You needed a bucket!

Order omelette
Sit down
Place bucket on head
Order chips

Simples!

Was this problem before or after you tried out your stock of "I'll have a crocodile sandwich ..... and make it snappy" type jokes?

It all went wrong when he tried the old "Do you have frog's legs? ~ Well hop to the kitchen and get me a plate of chips" routine.

How do you manage to find these places ? 

I suspect that they are normal establishments until the Nick effect kicks in.
