Something different
« on: February 03, 2010, 04:38:11 PM »
Last night we visited a newly revamped pub - a recce to check alternatives to Youngs.

Nice place, good beer, pleasant menu and prices.

One of the guys came back from the bar with something different to the Guinness he'd been drinking -

Addlestones Cloudy Cider - http://www.addlestones.co.uk/addlestones_home.asp

Although it's made by one of the big companies, it's very very nice - we all had a slurp.
Will definitely be giving that a go when the sun starts shining again.  cloud9:

So you're one of those whose legs don't work after 2 pints.   razz:

It was nice stuff, tasted more like scrumpy than the fizzy stuff on tap.
Certainly an apple flavour, but light and refreshing.

You've obviously never had a hangover from port then.

Oh and apart from the food/alcohol theme, the guys were very impressed at the number of females who came in. It's the quietest I have seen them for ages.

No I haven't - and by that inference I would take it not a thing to put on my wish list either  rubschin:

Cider .... ahhh ...

When I were learning my trade many years ago, we used to go up to a pub in the Clent Hills and there drink homebrew snakebite. I can't find any mention of the pub now; it's probably either fallen down or been redeveloped. It was really only the front room of a small house at the end of a lane.

Among it's many eccentricities was the functioning Symphonion  cloud9:

One of the countless treasures of Beamish Museum is this ornately wooden-cased Victorian upright symphonion. This coin-operated music box was built in Germany around 1900 and would have been "cutting edge" technology at the time, playing 64cm (25 1/4 inch) metal disks with it's 192-teeth, 2-comb mechanism.
The disk presently in the symphonion plays a tune from "Mignon", a French comic opera first performed in Paris in 1866.

I think the one in the pub played 'Jesu joy of man's desiring'
