Apart from the cat stuff and general couch potatoing today is (stupid) Steve v the Torch part deux

So a while back a brilliant (literally) pocket torch stopped working.  (Note that they are only a fiver each)

So after much procrastination (I am an expert) eventually yesterday i took it apart found the obvious fault (soldered joint broken) but could I find my electronics type soldering iron in my tip of a garage?  No

Choices were:
a)  just sling torch away - did get a brighter different one for Crimbo
b)  buy a replacement for ~£6 - that I don't really need
c) keep searching for said veteran soldering iron
d) try using my even older Weller Soldering gun but it is a bit of a beast and easily damages electronicery
e) buy new soldering iron for ~£16  eeek: - they do look good
f) think it out again
g) just open a bottle of something alcoholic and all will seem fine (for a while)

So of course I went for (e)and it's just arrived.  Procrastination will likely win the day though

Well, whatever, nevermind

Does it come with Lead-free solder...? Hopefully you have some proper stuff in the garage...

My 'big' soldering iron packed up the other week when it came to putting the pinball machine back together... It is on the bench awaiting a good looking at... With all the other broken stuff...  noooo:

yep got a reel of lead free with it and still have the leaded stuff.  I guess the torch was assembled with lead free.  Never used lead free before, IIRC it has to be got a lot hotter.

Can't offer you any encouragement with your big iron, IIRC it's the heating filament that tends to go.  That's a good feature of the Weller Gun, the 'bit' is the heating element as it completes the LV circuit.

Well, whatever, nevermind

The torch lives  ;D

About 10 minutes to set up and do the soldering (tis easy, just set the iron to 350o and then an hour to put all the fiddly angle adjusting and other pieces back together again in what look like the right places.  How they can sell these things for £10 for two is just amazing.
