Could be interesting rubschin:
You've had all the hosting Japanese protocol advice haven't you.  No not the business card and seating stuff, I recall begging the production director not to carry out his threat to do a kamikaze imitation when my lot turned up.  And if anyone threatens to do a Vera Lynn-esque rendition of Whale Meat again it's best to shoot them there and then

Well, whatever, nevermind

Well in this case they had the money we wanted so  . . . .

We did sell them a sophisticated planning system a few years later.  They wanted several but guess what they bought one and tried to copy it.  You try enforcing IPR at several thousand miles in courts where the judges can't speak English

Funny thing is I really quite like the Japanese - I hope you do too.

Its been a while since I've looked at Japanese etiquette but from what I can remember this may help.

Basically, you bow, bending from your waist with a straight back. Men usually keep their hands in their sides, and women usually put their hands together on their thighs with their fingers touching.

There are a range of bows for different situations but there are 2 that you should keep in mind Nick, the first one is to bow to 30 degrees (you may want to try this a couple of times beforehand as it will feel like a lot). Usually this is reserved for people of higher ranking that you but it should give a good first impression when you aren't sure where they are on the ladder in relation to you.

The second one is to bow to 45 degrees and is used when you really bugger something up (not that we are expecting you to be in the middle of a huge disaster or anything  whistle:) You won’t need to use this one very often, if you’re lucky.

Bear in mind that the Japanese don't expect foreigners to know the intricacies of bowing and they won't expect you to bow perfectly. The most important thing is that you don’t make it look rigid and unnatural, just try to relax and enjoy yourself.

On the business front it could be worth boning up on Kaizen and the latest incarnation of Six Sigma for the quality aspect.

Given just how complicated the bowing ritual can get, someone panicking with a protractor isn't that surprising. Bows can go anything up to 90 degrees depending on who you are greeting or the situation and that's before including those from the kneeling position.

The only other thing to remember will be to add 'san' on to the end of their names (or 'sama' if the person you are addressing is important enough).

Are you only doing lunch or have you been roped into dinner as well, as there is a whole load of potential landmines in that situation.  rubschin:
