Who'd have thunk it!  Banghead

Turns out it wasn't a software upgrade failure at all it was a hardware problem - the hard drive has failed....

The bloody thing exactly replicated the reported problems with Micro$hite update and even let me install XP >>> Win7 twice before failing with a continual re-boot.

Finally, I tried a low-level format and it failed that.

popped in a new hard drive late last night and it has been sweet as a nut...

That's digi for you eh...?

But you mustn't pull the string until it has warmed up properly.

No... the valves have to warm up first... and if you pull it too fast the computer stands on its end and falls off your desk...

Out of interest does Windows 7 also have readyboost? I've just bought a 4Gb USB memory stick in a sale and shoved it in my laptop (I can't be bothered with the hassle of taking Vista off and shoving XP on) and its going like a rocket now. Seeing as W7 is less memory intensive I'm curious if it is in there what kind of performance boost its gets if it is on there as well.
