Spitfire found in scrapyard sold for £1.78 million
« on: April 22, 2009, 05:40:43 AM »
Quote from: Daily Mail
Thirty years ago this Spitfire was little more than a rusting shell in a South African scrapyard.

Yesterday the fighter, airworthy again after years of painstaking work, fetched a record £1.78million at auction.

It was bought by British adventurer Steve Brooks who plans to keep it in this country and keep it flying.

Excellent!  happy088

But when they re-built the 'plane, where did they have to go to get the propeller manufactured?

Fucking Germany!  Banghead

Read it an weep...

When I did it several years ago in Florida, it was about 1500 dollars an hour, and worth every cent. Also you have to weigh less than 192 lbs.You can get a flight in one, but there is a long, long waiting list.

I would do anything to do it again.Amazing aeroplane, beyond description.

And the propellor thing. Many years ago Dowty, whose subsidiary Rotol made them originally, refused to repair or make any more propellors because they were it was not a commercial proposition. Hoffman in Germany said it would be proud and honoured to take on the work, so they do it all. Another victory for beancounters over engineers.
