But they can't make head nor tail of this either. Is it even English?

Government taskforce calls for greener home PCs

Green Shift aims to cut global energy use
Ian Williams, vnunet.com 11 Jun 2007

A UK government taskforce has been created to tackle carbon emissions from home computers.

An estimated 35 million tonnes of CO2 is generated from the production, operation and disposal of PCs and their peripherals each year.

Analysts reckon that the IT industry is responsible for two per cent of global CO2 emissions, equal to that of the airline industry.

The new public-private Green Shift taskforce will be led by Manchester City Council and will oversee the piloting of the 'Green PC' service.

"The Green PC service is part of a package of proposals that could make a fundamental contribution in meeting the challenge of climate change," said Richard Leese, councillor at Manchester City Council.

"Critical to our approach is that sustainability and inclusion go hand-in-hand. It is no use developing solutions that most people cannot afford. "

The service will use thin-client technology, connecting a shell PC in the home to super-efficient data centres across the country which it hopes will use around 75 per cent less energy than standard PCs.

"Innovative proposals like the Green PC service are essential if we are to tackle climate change," said community and local government minister Phil Woolas.

"Cyber-warming is a massive issue and this is a sign of how serious the UK is about tackling it. Only if all of our communities are engaged in action to tackle climate change will we be successful."

The service will be piloted in early 2008, and rolled out in late 2009.

For instance: Does "Thin-client technology" mean that anyone with a waist over 28 inches will be barred from owning a PC? shrugs:

It's bloody gibberish.  cussing:

A thin client (sometimes also called a lean client) is a client computer or client software in client-server architecture networks which depends primarily on the central server for processing activities, and mainly focuses on conveying input and output between the user and the remote server. In contrast, a thick or fat client does as much processing as possible and passes only data for communications and storage to the server.

Basically dumb terminals linked to a network server as far as I can remember.

Fair comment and I'm sure you are right but the whole article is still gibberish. Most PC and peripherals are not produced here but in China/Japan/Korea etc so that is not our problem. Feeding the starving of that part of the world would be if we took all their jobs away now.

My PC uses very little electricity (certainly no more than if I didn't have one and had to find other entertainment) so I just don't see how it is contributing to the myth of Global Warming.

I can, however, see why the Government (particularly this one and Labour Controlled Manchester Council) would want us to all have "shell PCs" operating via THEIR server. Makes it much easier to control, manipulate and ultimately tax.

Oh and in Wenchy's unexplained absence I'll say it for her. GEEK!  pcwhack:

If that does turn out to be the case then after the time and money I've invested into building and upgrading my PC I'll borrow from the americans and say they can have my computer when they pry it from my cold dead fingers  evil:

What a complete pile of shite ? set up a ?task force? to analyse the problem? Presumably the ?task force? used a pile of PC?s, travelled to meetings by car and produced a report that required the felling of a small forest.

I?m sickened by this continual climate change babble invading every aspect of our lives, generating more excuses for legislation, taxation and control.

It?s about time somebody had the guts to stand up to these ecoloonies and point out the effects of their proposals. No matter what technology we choose it will still be manufactured in the Far East and it will still be transported half way around the world in ships using the dirtiest, most polluting fuels available.

It is the economics of ?growth? that need to be changed ? no matter how much you reduce consumption if you are committed to continually growing the economy you eventually end up back where you started.   cussing:

You said it Barman!

We   all live in contemporary "consumer society" where more is always the measure of our worth ... More = winner ... less = loser. So that we are stripping the planet of non renewable resources and choking our atmosphere with greenhouse emissions.

Climate change is no more a myth than the melting of permafrost in the Russian Arctic townships for the first time since human occupation.

For Australian third generation farmers leaving their five year heat dessicated paddocks knowing that their land is becoming desert.

We are all in trouble, and if we do not accept personal resonsibility quite soon for our own actions, and make some effort to live more intelligently within our vulnerable eco system, those still in denial of man made climate change, I think are in for a shock!

With all due respect Mozo (i.e. none) that is the kind of bullshit response that allows those in power to get away with all this ecobabble shite! Personal responsibility my arse!

The fact is that the government* is totally dependent on growth. They need growth, they die without it.

No matter what ?personal responsibility? you take to reduce your carbon footprint it is irrelevant. The government needs you to use energy, they need you to breed more, and they need you to buy pointless things from factories. In that way the economy grows and all is well!

Whatever the governments of the world say about the evils of global warming they continue to build new runways, encourage flying, subsidise people having children, build more roads. They need you to fly, they need you to buy petrol, and they love it when you buy highly taxed fags and booze. Guess what, if people stopped buying petrol and walked to work the price would come down.

Whatever the government says about climate change I will continue to see it as nothing more than an opportunity to raise more tax and restrict/manage/control the population. When the government actually does something like attempting to control the population or restricting flying then I?ll stop putting my TV on standby. Until that day they can stick it up their collective arses.  cussing:
