Caught!
« on: August 08, 2008, 12:41:57 PM »
Aged 18 months me ~ scoffing the hen's food prepared and placed outside to cool by my Grandmother.   redface:

Edit for the curious: It was a bran mash, boiled with kitchen scraps. I can still recall the smell of it. From the look of the bucket the chickens had already had their share ..... I could not have eaten it all!

Weighed in at 10lb 9 ozs ~ Mother never quite forgave me  redface:

They used to say a fat baby is a healthy baby ~ Of course the fat police weren't about back then.
I was born in a farm cottage, chickens in the garden provided my daily boiled egg, pig sty at the back, still warm cream straight from the newly milked cows for my breakfast porridge every day. This all probably laid the ground work for the heart problems that reared their ugly head when I was 36 and had my first heart attack.

Oh yes ~ bones like rocks ~ unfortunately the arteries are the same.

The other problem was that Dad left the army in 1948 and got a job merchandising for Frys, the chocolate people. We lived at the cottage in Odiham and he worked in Southampton. Fry's depot was next to the Fyffes banana warehouses in the docks so a good deal of trading took place. Every weekend Dad would turn up with a large bag of chocolate and bananas.

'Fraid so ~ but then we didn't know that back then. Like I said ... All the doctors agreed "A fat baby is a healthy baby" ...... But then most doctors smoked and recommended certain brands for asthma sufferers  noooo:

And to prove the whole story here I am with my pet hen "Bessie". Like the "sun hat"?
She pecked me one day and that Sunday we ate her. Grandmother was not going to have her darling boy pecked!
