Was your mother ever a WAAF by any chance?
I hesitate to pick you up on this you old RAF mascot, but I think you mean WRAF.
My mother was a WAAF in WW2 and the service disappeared shortly after the end of the war.

Indeed.
The Womans Royal Air Force was formed in April 1918 and was known as the WRAF. It was disbanded in December 1919
At the outbreak of WWII the Womans Auxillary Air Force was formed and on 1st Fedbruary 1945 the WAAF was indeed renamed WRAF ~ However the members of the renamed force continued, to this day, to be known as WAAFs. I married one in 1966

and divorced from her in 1987.
Note that I did not say "Was your mother a member of the WAAF?" but rather "Was your mother ever a WAAF?"
No I am not miffed ~ simply pedantic.
