Bastard Technology
« on: March 10, 2008, 05:00:29 PM »
I posted on this board just yesterday that my UPS had packed up.  evil:

Today we have a moohoosive power failure in the village.  eeek:

How does that work then?  Banghead

Interestingly, out of the systems connected at power failure time, the XP systems have booted and recovered okay but my linux based music server is currently undergoing treatment to try and rebuild the file system…  rubschin:

Prolly a stupid question BM but have you ever heard of making backups?  whistle:

Prolly a stupid answer… but did you read the OP?  point:

Yes, I have loadsabackups plus a 750Gbyte mirrored networked shared disc system… but the power corrupted the (operating) file system on the (linux) music server and I had to manually rebuild it.  noooo:

OK?  whistle:

You ought to get one of those UPS thingies. Save you a lot of trouble.

I did but I've known some of the more paranoid IT geeks I've worked with in the past zip and make manual backups of critical file structures.

As for your music server, what about using an external storage drive for the actual tracks. Then if you need to in future its a simple case of Fdisking and reinstalling the OS.

Sorry if that seems overly simplistic but I've been having to explain things with glove puppets at work today.  Banghead

I think they just talk a lot of bollox to make us feel inferior Snoops.

We had to go and buy a new digi box last night because we had a sort of echo with the sound on the old one. I had specifically asked Mr Wench if he had pulled out all the cables that weren't attached to anything. We got home installed the new one and it did the same thing. At this point I had a look and the tv still had a cable plugged into it picking up signal and giving the echo.  Banghead

I was ill. In bed. He asked for virtual help. I tried. How difficult is it to find cables that are only connected at one end and pull them out?  Banghead
