My continued problems with a PC

Any one here know exactly what \WINDOW\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM might contain.
This is the core of the error messages that have plagued me for the last three years. Despite throwing money at the damned thing and receiving assurances from three independant Geeks today it again refuses to start saying that "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: and then quotes the above. doh:

Various faults, crashes and downright stoppages have shown this message, as I say, for three years. I am throwing the bloody machine on the tip this very day (after first removing the hard drive and destroying it 'cos I don't trust anyone anymore, least of all those who would sell me programmes "Guaranteed to wipe your hard drive" but I really would love to know what that file actually is. confused2:

Meanwhile please be tolerant if I am slower even than usual .... this laptop isn't the latest model. confused:

Thats a fairly important windows directory not a file Snoop. If that is missing then the only thing I can suggest is to get your XP disks out again and reinstall the whole thing from scratch.

Well they said it was a file ... but anywhooo. The XP disks have been reinstalled a total of 5 times in the past 3 months and still this appears. I would guess I have reinstalled some twelve times over the four years I have had the PC, always using the provided diskette, because this fault keep occuring. Clearly then the disc itself is knackered ~ the possibility of which has always been denied by the supplier whose name appears on the diskette.

One of my users PCs upstairs had the same error message itself last week - also a Dell.

It was easy enough to sort though...

One of the problems with Dell is that one does not get a "Microsoft" reinstall disk but one that Dell have produced themselves. To resolve problems using it one has to speak to "Peter" or "Janet" who both sound like Peter Sellers doing his "Indian Doctor" routine and who insist on working through an hour long script of "Assisted Self Diagnosis" on your PC before they admit defeat and get a "Supervisor" who wants to go through the same routine.

The only thing I can suggest in that case Snoop is to use a friend's copy of XP if they have the official disk and use your serial number when you install it. That will give you a clean install without all of the extra junk that Dell will insist on adding.

Well he has to wait for either you or Baldymort to remember to feed him. If that doesnt teach patience nothing will..

If all else fails Snoop check a site called bigpockets. Barebones rigs from there cost bugger all and you can probably strip the extra parts from the dell to make up a useable unit.
