A bastard to hit at 70mph! 
Mate of mine was driving along the M4 one night - three lanes of heavy traffic...
Suddenly there was a carboard box in the middle of the road - he had no chance to swerve it or stop without a major pile up. He remembers thinking that a cardboard box couldn't do much damage before he hit the box full of engine parts!
He was a mess and the car was a mess!
Funny story though, when I was 'awarded' my first company car it was the same one! Cortina 2.0 GL - MRD 832X. It crabbed down the road and made strange clunking noises from the back but being my first Company Car I wasn't going to reject it!
Even funnier, I left the company and was working for another at Hyde Park Corner - computer stuff.
Pulled an all-nighter at Robert Fleming in the city fitting a load of HP150 desktop computers in a network to a central HP150 with a pile of hard drives attached (the traders thought the Hard Drives were too noise to have at their desks).
Called our 'tame' MiniCab company to come and collect us at about 5am and the guy turned up in the same car! It was still going all those years later and still crabbed and made the noises from the rear!
