Japanese authorities have hanged three men, bringing the number of executions in the country this year to nine.

For the first time, the names of the hanged men were made public.

It didn't say what they had done.

One was 75 years old, which would rule out a lot of serious crimes I would have thought?

I thought their crimes were a rather bizarre omission from the story – after all it would throw a rather different light on the whole affair if it was shoplifting or something…  rubschin:

I don't think China counts as a "Major Industrial Nation" yet ~ though clearly it should but Chinese domestic economy is still very much biased toward farming, at least in the eyes of the Yanks who seem to decide these things.

Try this for a definition of Major Industrial Nations ~ and I'm not saying it is right but it does seem to demonstrate the thinking behind such titles.

The G8 Group is an unofficial forum of the heads of the leading industrialized democracies (Russia, the U.S., Britain, France, Japan, Germany, Canada and Italy), where the European Commission is also represented and fully participates. This forum was designed to harmonize attitudes to acute international problems. The member states account for 49% of global exports, 51% of industrial output, and 49% of assets in the International Monetary Fund.

You will note that China does not get a mention.

I figure the last line detailing the "wealth" of those involved says it all.

".....to the practice of not telling inmates the date of their execution until just before they are taken to the gallows....."

Personally, I'm anti-capital punishment but leaving that aside I wonder whose best interests the above serves?

Years waiting for the door to open and see the bloke with the black hood in his hand. An ongoing, exquisite form of torture in it's own right I should think.
