And what punishment would they have received if their mother wasn't the Assistant House Democratic Leader? Call me a cynic but something tells me if a regular person had assaulted a police officer they certainly would not be getting probation.

No, it's got nothing to do with party lines. You have the child of a senior politician getting what barely classes as a slap on the wrist when you know that if it was anyone else who had vandalised a monument and punched a police officer in the face hard enough to draw blood they would have had the book thrown at them.
