Cyprus has been a success, certainly compared to the UK

Not really, the place is FUBAR... Time will tell obvs.

But IMHO locking people indoors for months on end, demanding they request permission to leave their homes once a day, enforcing a curfew and destroying the economy is not really 'success'...  noooo:

I posted on a forum here a while back that the danger of Lockdown and scaring the population to death is that Lockdown becomes the default 'solution' to the next outbreak of flu... There are still people here who are terrified to go out, who buy on-line and sanitise the shopping when it arrives...  noooo:

Our favourite restaurant in Epi has closed forever... So that is the owner, his wife, four or five staff, the landlord, the guy that supplied the wine, the guy that supplied the food, the electricity company - all impacted... Imagine that multiplied all over the island...  noooo:

Look at Apey and all the other DJs, the hotels and all the restaurants that rely on the 'Summer Season' to maintain them throughout the year...

As I said, time will tell - but if (as I suspect) this turns out to be nothing more than a nasty dose of flu then Cyprus certainly won't have been a success - nor will any other country that FUBARed their economy because of it...

Here we go, more evidence of the success of Cyprus with new rules introduced today...  ::)

Quote
1 / It is mandatory to use mask by the general population in closed busy areas (e.g. shopping centers, banks, supermarkets, hospitals, churches, etc) with a penalty of € 300.

2 / Sampling checks at airports are increasing from 600 a day to 1,000, with emphasis on Cypriots returning from leisure trips (holidays), since it has shown that a large percentage of cases comes from Cypriots with travel history.

3 / It is recommended to nurses, private and public, and to nursing homes to strict respect visits and if possible to restrict them to the minimum possible.

4 / Restriction of completeness to 50 % in Public Transport (buses) is restored.

5 / Police control of people who should be put into self-restriction when coming from Class C countries, or when they are close case contacts. In consultation with the competent authorities, a daily compliance check will be carried out on these persons.

6 / Intensified controls and surveillance in businesses, catering areas and other premises by the competent authorities with explicit instructions for zero tolerance.

In addition to the above, and in terms of Limassol and after the latest developments, in the effort to reduce the outbreaks and breakdown of transmission chains identified, the following measures were decided and entered into force today at midnight:

1 / Restore the limitation of the maximum number of 10 people to social gatherings.

2 / Restore the limitation of the maximum number of people to catering premises to 75 persons indoors and 150 persons outdoors, regardless of square meters.

3 / Churches determine the presence of people at the base of square meters depending on the protocol, which will not exceed 75 people.
All the above measures regarding Limassol will be in force for three weeks.

I reckon Lockdown again by mid August... noooo:

Second wave gubbernment chaos here.Stay at home but go the pub and have some restaurant discounts and wear mask sometimes! Wankers!  Dominic Cummings can take his infected family on holiday but no one else can! Wankers.

It is going to be worse in October onwards, especially as idiots get careless. I shall be doing a personal lockdown. I also now kick twats in shops who don't wear masks. They are selfish twats.

It's going to get worse come the end of summer anyway, less sun means less UV to knacker the virus RNA when it's in the air so there is going to be the standard local gubbernment panic planning which probably means loads of town/city/regional lockdowns.   noooo:

We're not doing so bad in the league table of European nations ranked by recent case load per capita (data from https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/cases-2019-ncov-eueea )

Interestingly we were 15th yesterday but Cyprus has climbed up 2 notches in same time to 20th

Councils can bulldoze buildings that have been contaminated by Covid outbreaks? Which stupid bastard came up with that brilliant idea?  facepalm:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8593993/Councils-BULLDOZE-contaminated-homes-resort-stop-second-wave-coronavirus.html

You don't have to destroy buildings because of an outbreak event, if anything that would likely spread the virus further not to mention the logistics of having somewhere you can safely dump the rubble. You can never guarantee total sterilisation but if you want to properly decontaminate a building then use the same approach as the CDC and USAMRIID did for the Ebola Reston outbreak back in 1990.

Quote
The decon team scrubbed the building with bleach until they took the paint off the concrete floors, and still they kept scrubbing. When they were satisfied that all of the building’s inside surfaces had been scoured, they moved on to the final stage, the gas. The decon team taped the exterior doors, windows, and vents of the building with silver duct tape. They taped sheets of plastic over the exterior openings of the ventilation system. They made the building airtight. At various places inside the monkey house, they set out patches of paper saturated with spores of a harmless bacterium known as Bacillus subtilis niger. These spores are hard to kill. It is believed that a decon job that kills niger will kill almost anything.

The decon team brought thirty-nine Sunbeam electric frying pans to the monkey house. Sunbeam electric frying pans are the Army’s tool of choice for a decon job. The team laid an electric cable along the floor throughout the building, strung with outlets, like a cord for Christmas-tree lights. At points along the cable, they plugged in the Sunbeam frying pans. They wired the cable to a master switch. Into each Sunbeam frying pan they dropped a handful of disinfecting crystals. The crystals were white and resembled salt. They dialed the pans to high. At 1800 hours on December 18, someone threw the master switch, and the Sunbeams began to cook. The crystals boiled away, releasing formaldehyde gas. Since the building’s doors, windows, and vents were taped shut, the gas had nowhere to go, and it stayed inside the building for three days. The gas penetrated the air ducts, soaked the offices, got into drawers in the desks, and got inside pencil sharpeners in the drawers. It infiltrated Xerox machines and worked its way inside personal computers and inside the cushions of chairs and fingered down into the floor drains until it touched pools of lingering bleach in the water traps. Finally the decon team, still wearing space suits, went back inside the building and collected the spore samples. The Sunbeam treatment had killed the niger.

There is an old piece of wisdom in biohazard work that goes like this: you can never know when life is exterminated. Life will survive almost any blitz. Total, unequivocal sterilization is extremely difficult to achieve in practice and is almost impossible to verify afterward. However, a Sunbeam cookout that lasts for three days and exterminates all samples of niger implies success. The monkey house had been sterilized. Ebola had met opposition. For a short while, until life could re-establish itself there, the Reston Primate Quarantine Unit was the only building in the world where nothing lived, nothing at all.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.
