In praise of Google..
« on: June 08, 2019, 06:51:34 AM »
This week my Google Homes (I have 4 now  redface:) started playing up... Instead of the nice British lady talking to me she had turned into an American!  eeek:

So I Googled it (naturellement) and discovered there were a few others with the same issue, British to American, American to British, etc. At the bottom of the Google Home page there was a 'Live Chat' button which I pressed more for fun than any expectation of a result.

To my amazement, not only did I get to chat on-line with a support person, but she telephoned me, then called me back 24 hours later to see if the problem was fixed, e-mailed me a status update and a final e-mail to confirm that the problem was resolved!  eeek:

Very impressed...

Although I've just discovered that because YouTube is Google Play Music now (or summat shrugs:), if I attempt to watch a YouTube video while she is playing music on the four Google Homes the music stops as 'it can only use one device at a time'...  evil:

Just upgraded to Google Mesh WiFi...  cloud9:

rubschin: pricey

I just use our base BT hub and a couple of those cheap Netgear extenders to get WiFi out to the CCTV.  What does Google mesh add?
Well, whatever, nevermind

Range and quality...

I've been using TP-Links to get signal around the apartment (reinforced concrete loves WiFi and I had the house wired with CAT 5 to solve that issue) and they haven't been very reliable...

...and I wanted to extend the coverage.

The Google WiFi works brilliantly (I have three)...

The only 'Gotcha' is that the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks share the same SSID which has fucked me up somewhat... Just finally solved that...

Pretty cool system actually...

If you use those Blink CCTV cameras you have to force all the extended networks to use the same SSID which seems to not work too well in just one area
Well, whatever, nevermind

Yarp, having the same SSID is one of the benefits if the network is large...

I've also set up a 'Guest' network so they can have access to Interwebz but not to my NAS, etc.
