Why not make the whole plane out of the stuff they make the black box out of .....they always survive ..... rubschin:

heard that one many times.

Absolutely astonishing that it survived for 4 years at a depth of 12,000feet too.
The pressure down there is horrendous, not to mention the impact and corrosive sea water. eeek: eeek:

I felt a bit guilty watching it tbh, as it's a sort of morbid curiosity, but it was absolutely rivetting to see how the story unfolded.
All because of the 'thingy' (forget the name of it now) that points forward just under the cockpit to guage the speed.

It had frozen up during a brief ice storm, but would have cleared within a couple of minutes apparently, and certainly wasn't affecting the performance of the aircraft.

That's it, tar!
Simple but effective.

Funny, I've always wondered what they are whilst doing me 100 point safety check before boarding. rubschin:

Pitot tube should be continually heated...

Part of the pre-flight check when I was flying was to switch it on and check it was hot during the walk-around....

Yep named after Mr Pitot.  The jokes he must have had

Anyway my story.  Used to work at GEC where they made the Air Data computers that made sense of what the Pitot tube measures.  And in 1974 they were all mechanical with little wheels and cogs that whirred around.  Real Anna Log ad something quite magic to behold as you put a tube on the input and tried to see how 'high' you could get it to believe it was by sucking on the tube.

Sadly we could never get the girlies to play that game - for training comparison purposes like  ;).

Well, whatever, nevermind

What that those aircraft that held your lives in their hands were totally dependent on analog gears and wheels to give that all important Indicated Air Speed reading?
