DRL's
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:45:25 AM »
I'm getting absolutely slaughtered with abuse on a motoring forum I frequent, due to my absolute hatred of these completely ott led daytime  running lighhts that have sprouted up on many new cars, oh, and 'No Nailed' onto the front of owld Vectras and Hondas too. sick2:

Talk about willy waving gone mad. ::)

I don't know but I suspect the increasing fitment of DRL's by manufacturers is due to their desire to fit only one spec across the whole of the European Community where some countries insist on the use of lights even in daytime. By fitting them as standard the manufacturers will be able to send the vehicles to all countries ...... Of course this theory is blown apart by the need to fit vehicles coming to the UK with Right Hand Drive but Volvo have got away with it for years and the increasing implementation of Euro Rules here will, I have no doubt, sooner or later make the position of the steering wheel a matter for debate.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

My arguement with this latest craze isn't actually about safety, more about posing with these extra bright and almost dazzling led's during daytime.
Look like ruddy mobile christmas trees on most cars.

VW seem to have it right...not that I'm even remotley convinced of the validation of this 'safety' reasoning..
At least they just use the sidelights during the daytiime mode.

My new car has got them, and I've discovered how to diisable them, which I've done, MUCH to the great annoyance of the forum mebers it seems, who simply luuuurve to rattle on about just how great they are. lol:
They've become a source of great bait for me now, and they really don't like it. eveilgrin:

I argued that we all seem to have survived without them so far, so why all this great SAFETY debate now? Shrugs:

One argued back that how many of us would have survived if we didn't have seatbelts, airbags, ABS etc etc?

I retorted that IF DRL's are SO SO important towards safety issues, then how come they can be turned off by the owner? whistle:

No but their infant and primary schoolchildren all wear day-glo cross belts, as they do in France, whenever they are traveling to and from school ~ meanwhile in Holland there is an increasing use of day-glo waistcoats for school kids  whistle:

See also the legal requirement to carry hi-viz waistcoats for the driver and all passengers when driving in France and other continental countries.
