I know virtually zilch about laptops, but have decided to buy a couple for Growlers jnr. so they can do all their course work without hogging this thing all night long.
Too cold in here for them anyway....as i like it.
What should I be looking for, and where from?
Nowt flash or expensive, but capable of this 'wireless' internet thingy which is something else I know absolutely nowt about. confused:

Snoopy bought one for about three bonios recently. He swears by it. Does everything except take him for a walk.

As ever, most helpful. ::)

It does sort of depend what you want to spend and what you want them to use it for. For instance are they likely to want to play memory hogging games? Or is it literally just homework and some net surfing?

Mainly homework and net surfing. Mini Moose has to download pictures and stuff for her art and needleworky course work, and I daresay to talk the usual teenage shite with her mates on that wretched MSN thing.
Growler jnr will also be doing some coursework, writing essays, a few non violent games and also for web surfing to consatantly update his cyber space car dealership. ::)

I don't know what it is! Ask him!!

It is an Asus Eee
Your children will think it's the mutt's nuts until they discover that it has limited memory, is useless for games, music downloads etc. Picture storage takes up huge amounts of memory by comparison with what an Asus has.
I use it as a notebook and download everything to a memory stick thence to the main PC. If not it will be overfull and useless within weeks (if not days ~ knowing children). Also it works on Linux not Windows and as my daughter found out the school systems that they want to get involved with do not like Linux. Not what you are looking for at all. That said I think it is brilliant as a very portable notebook.
But then so is

This is what I have

But I also have a mahoosive HP desk top to back it up.

So forget that then. Go to ASDA!

Mr Wench wants his for school work, surfing, messanger, and the webcam for parental communication. He is getting this one.

For picture/music storage I am thinking about picking up an external hard drive that we would share.

Mrs Growler has gone to Chester to see some man in a little independent computer shop for advice.
Told her catergorically NOT to go into PC Werld as she originally suggested, as they will no doubt try and stitch us up with some shite they can't shift onto anyone other than numpties. ::)
-
PC World is fine so long as you don't go to them for advice. I'm quite happy to go and buy stuff there but I do my research previously.

I thnk they are going bust. Could be a sale on soon

£5-600 for a pair. Must be identical, or ther'll be accusations of favouritism. ::)
Need to be able to use them wirelessy too I suppose?
Will they be able to link up with my current server, or will they have to be used via some other provider?
-
If you have wireless set up in the house they will be able to link to it with little effort (by them ~ you need do nothing). If you do not have wireless setup in the house then they obviously will only be able to use their wireless laptops in McDonalds or similar.
Try http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/?adnetwork=af
But remember to check that VAT is included in the price as they show both with and without VAT
This should do them ~ if they don't overload with games and music. If they do then get them an external hard drive each. They're only £20 or so from Amazon.
http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=4535
Then again it is not wireless so they would need USB Wireless adapters (£16 each from Amazon)

No. Haven't got 'wireless' here.
Is this just another expression for 'remote'? Bit like my mouse is 'wireless'?
All sounds very duanting and time consuming. Growler jnr will have the task of setup, with interfering know it all (but knows nowt in all honesty) little sister in close attendance. Rows will surely follow...guaranteed. ::)
-
Those Viking laptops sound good Nick....not that I'd know any different like. ::)
Mrs Growler is now twittering about them being unsafe to actually use on you lap now ffs! Banghead
She reads and listens to far too much shite. ::)

She scould stick needled in them first.Callme, you tit!

Mrs G is right ~ Laptops do get very hot when in use and can cause blistering to thighs if used for lengthy periods without something to rest them on. You can buy special trays or alternatively sit at a table/desk. Some batteries have been known to "burst into flames" but that was more a design fault than anything.
Wireless connection means that you don't have to plug into the telephone line and more than one person at a time can be connected. You need a Wireless Hub attached to the phone line. You can use the phone at the same time as both Growler's and Mrs G are on line. It is nothing like your wireless mouse because the "hub" does need to be connected to the mains as well.
Best to get are without doubt Netscape (around £45)

No, Mrs Growler is rambling on about then radiating harmful rays that can cause cancer or summat. Bit like all this todge about mobile phones. ::)

Wimmin think everything will cause cancer of one sort or another.
I figure we all gotta die of sometime. If your name is on it then too bad, if it ain't you will die of something else.
Oh and if you have Broadband (which you must have for wireless to work) DON'T tell your IP that you are going wireless or they will start whittering on about limits and fvck knows what else. What they don't know won't hurt them. My provider wanted me to only use their equipment, wanted me to restrict to only one hub and one wireless machine etc etc. I said bollox and bought a Netscape hub that sometimes runs up to 4 laptops at a time + my PC. They do not know.

Shouldn't this be simple? rubschin:

Never even crossed my mind to tell them.
I have a Belkin modem/router - easy to set up and works perfectly.

I'd get the bt router, easiest set up in the world even MILFH managed it with only one call to Chez Wench.
The heat thing, yes they get hot. Don't use them in bed on the duvet as NO air at all can get in. We use laptrays for ours or use them on the table.

Pretty much anything you buy new now will come with vista. Although I've been using mine for a few months now and I can't say I have terribly strong feelings for it either way.

A sodden Mrs Growler has just returned, armed with a piece of paper from nice Mr independent computer man in Chester...apparently, so she says. confused:
Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 2727, 2 of, with wireless router thingy, all supplied and fitted by himself for £768, less a bit of dissy for purchasing two. Probably means a tenner then ey? ::)
How's that sound, cus I have no idea. Don't understand all these technical specs tbh, and nor does Nick apparently. That makes me feel marginally 'not alone' then.

Viking.299 each
Mrs G is a well known nutter. She can pay

Argos sell them at £293.61 each. I note that they only have 1GB RAM, even for Vista Home Basic I'd want 2GB.
Still 2 x £293.61 plus a modem router at about £60 then he's charging about £100 installation ~ not bad.

You have the link!
I know, and I thank you. Nowt has been decided upon, as me 'ed is currently swimming, and I've just had an unholy row with Mrs Growler about a flamin' turkey for crimbo....all because i said it's a bit sad to think that it will currently be running around the farm without a care in the world.

£384 for the pair all up and running. Could save a great deal of mither and heartache.
Can the memorys be increased easily enough from 1 to 2 GB's? Just a matter of slotting a new board in or summat isn't it...for a price obviously. ::)

Laptop memory can be expanded but if memory serves me correctly its more expensive and a little more fiddly than upgrading it on a desktop.

Laptop memory used to always be bespoke for different manufacturers... However I was pleasantly supriised to find mine had a 'standard' chip and I could buy an extra 1G in PC World the last time I was over for buttons...

Reading customer reports on this model last night. Generally ok, and good vfm in their opinions, but very noisy fan apparently.

So I bought Mrs TMR (to be) a laptop for Christmas - a HP G60. Very nice it is too. This morning, a fairly innocuous request - "TMR, how do you operate the built-in webcam?"
Two hours later, after finally downloading god knows how many patches and "You Cam" software, we have it going...
It would be far too easy to simply have the right bloody software installed in the first place, wouldn't it cussing:
-
I can't imagine why the built in webcam didn't work straight off. Perhaps it did?, Mrs TMR (to be) has had it for a couple of weeks after all rubschin:
Hope you've made a set of recovery disks.

From various Googling, it seems it would have worked automatically if she had gone into MSN Messenger, but as she never does she simply wanted to be able to see it in action. The HP Pavillion notebooks have Quickplay pre-installed and this too would have allowed simple, clickable functionality.
And don't worry, I have a full set of recovery disks ;)

If you look at apple's products BM, I-Pod, I-Mac, I-phone etc. From what I've seen of a lot of the people down here who buy them it tends to translate as I-Malabelgeek

And some of us like them because they've been the only 'puter they've ever known, work reliably, virus free, are the industry standard for all things cr'ative, hate the fact the fact they're so bloody expensive but it's tax deductible, couldn't really give a toss whether they're sky blue pink or not... but, yes, they're 8)

TBH it is a case of horses for courses> Design work is certainly easier and better on a Mac. Word processing and general game playing, look-ups on Google etc do not need the additional expenditure so a PC is more than adequate. I would personally feel a lot more comfortable with Apple if they didn't admit that they charge a premium price, not to cover costs, pay for research and development etc but simply because they view it as a premium product that people are prepared to pay for. If they didn't sell at the asking price they would drop their prices soon enough but so long as Barnum's theory holds true they will not.
As it is the THW is getting a Mac Book thingy courtesy of her BF's father who is in Web Design and has one available second hand and cheap.

That sounds like an excellent plus ;D She might get hooked tho' rubschin:
