Sorry to hear that Tel. I might be in the same situation after September, all depends if I'm TUPE'ed over and if the new employer then wants me and on what terms etc

Barman, give that man a stiff one  eeek:

Sorry for all you guys threatened with or having received notice of redundancy. When my company said "Sorry but we are going to 'give you' early retirement on health grounds" when I was 52 I felt much the same but there is life after work. I won't say I have earned as well as I did in London but I still turn a crust, life is much more my own and the cost of "going to work" has, of course, dropped out of the financial equation. Offers of work (odd consultancy, will you read and evaluate, can you have a look at etc" still crop up from time to time even though I have been out of the system for 7 years now. I'm sure you will find other employment without difficulty.
Above all: Do not be afraid of the unknown and do not fear trying something completely new .... no matter how "off the wall" it seems at the time. If you fancy it, have a go.

Now can I stop being serious please? ... It hurts my brain.

Well said Snoopy.

My two elder brothers took early retirement both after working only with one company since leaving school. One now is a technical assistant in a secondary school the other works part time for an auction company and does painting and decorating jobs when he's in the mood. Happy as Larry, the pair of them.

Now back at home. Wait for official letter on saturday then final meeting on wednesday.

No idea what I will do as such, been in IT since 72, so no real other skills to speak of. Not fussed about what I end up doing as long as I am earning. Don't mind a complete change at all.

Best thing is that Mrs Tel is not panicking, she's a pretty stable lady thank god.

Still got my stuff in office to sort out although as I had pretty much seen this coming I've already brought a load home.
By the looks of it there will be more cuts soon, some were at Xmas but things are not really any better and our Hun masters want their return on their investment although it is their autocratic ways and arrogance that cause the problems.

At least it is not winter (fingers crossed).

Gym later, then a Youngs or two.

PS TMR saw Mr Hawkes in the "old girl" at Mitcham Cricket Green, he slowed down when he saw me and very nearly had a motor-bike in his boot.

Or as Gareth Chilcott once said after an England defeat "I'm off for a couple of quiet pints,.... followed by 10 or 12 noisy ones"

Not sure if it's one those "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" scenarios.

Will wait and see what the package is and what I need to do.

What he does not tell us is whether Mrs Nick is satisfied .......... her comments could well use up our entire bandwidth  surrender:

Well of course she has her reservations. And some criticisms. And has inspected the results carefully.

And I said, reasonably enough I think, "IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY IT HAS BEEN DONE YOU CAN TRY DOING IT YOURSELF".

rubschin:  I bet she said, at some stage, "Are you sure that .......?"

Mine always does, at which point I usually walk from the room handing her the spanner/screwdriver/hammer as I pass.
I find it best not to actually speak at this stage as whatever I say is sure to be taken down and will definitely be used as evidence against me at some future date.

Fear not Tel, I have been down the same road twice, one company invited me back after 3 months when things went tits up, I declined, best thing I have ever done. Try the charity business, no doubt you have lots of skills that are transferable. Good luck and put a pint on my tab behind the bar.

BM will have a fit at the mention of the word Tab and he goes all funny if anyone suggests Slate ~ I saw him faint the other day when someone said he'd lost a slate off his roof. I suggest that "Account" might perhaps fool the old boy though.

Haven't done 35 years just a paltry 24 at this place, so no watch.

Am due for a meeting at noon where my fate will be determined. Have presumed that this was final, all done and dusted, but this morning have had an email from marketing girl saying that last weeks board meeting has decided to set up a working party to handle the re-branding of the company and I am included. Don't know what's going on now, if I go today what kind of message are they sending out to the rest of the company?

Strange or daft?

rubschin:  Better than a kick in the crotch mate. Thing is to not waste the chance or the money. Bank it and seek new horizons.

Biggest problem I encountered was that the monthly bills still keep coming in and, of course, the credit cards still need servicing. I would suggest putting the cards on ice until a new position is found ... I've seen too many keep spending at their old level by using one card to pay off another etc. I knew I was not going to work again and had to accept that earnings/income was reduced by 66% so I cut up all cards and made arrangements with the card companies to freeze interest and accept token payments until I got sorted. You are, fortunately, not in the position of not being able to seek more work but it may take a few months before you feel confident enough to resume living at recent standards.

Mortgage finishes in November. one loan to be paid off and no debt anywhere else, just the usual bills. Will have to sit and budget things out.

Will wait for my pension details to come through, could take it as I am over 50. Also have AVCs but don't know what I can do with them yet.

Basically no panic.

And of course you can claim no benefits (Job Seekers etc) until they deem you to have spent all your redundancy etc but you MUST still register at the Job Centre and suffer the humiliation of being "advised" by a spotted youth or stupid female returnee to work after the "having a family" gap of eighteen years the minute your employment ceases to get the NI credited or they will be chasing you for a lump sum to bring OAP up to date (they usually start that one just before your 60th birthday!)

T'aint the shops m'dear .... 'tis the locals. "Too slow to catch a cold" as my old dad would have said.

If I want shops I have Manchester and London much easier to reach than Norwich and the parking in either is easier as I recall.

Norwich used to be part of my patch some 15 years ago and getting the local police moving was nigh impossible. One of my contracts was to provide security at the Crown and Magstrates Courts so I spent some time there. Also had the contract with Jarrolds printers, Colemans the mustard people and several others.

I was thinking something similar myself BM
No never went to County Hall but if you remember the new Law Courts being built I was there a lot then. Or if you watched the justices turn up for the innaugral "swearing in". Them in long robes, wigs and stocking etc, Trumpeters from the Local Regiment and lurking in the background a silver haired chap with a large moustache, wearing a pinstriped suit and an "earpiece" with curly lead down under the collar, who talked out of the side of his mouth into a small mike on his lapel. That was me being as inconspicuous as 6ft, 16 stone security people can be.

And before Nick gets in .... yes I was that slim then ~ but it was before age, running pubs and diabetes all got to me.

Am now in the process of hooking up old and new PCs. What fun!

KVM and switch works fine but as the 2 machines are in different domains, connect them and transferring data and settings is going to be fun. having to remember the black arts of TCP/IP etc.

www.skillfair.co.uk (http://www.skillfair.co.uk)

A new life beckons. And a more lucrative one. When I got made redundant I put enough money into my account to cover all DDs and Sos for 6months so I could forget about bills while I got on making some money.

11 years on and I have a better quality of life than I ever did when working.

Seriously(for once)

I had fun with that site. Signed up as client so found I was looking for employees, so cancelled and signed up again. Confirmation emails then trashed my Outlook Express making it freeze only to be undone by a re-boot. managed to get rid of messaages and email was then fine.
Same day I bought a USB keyboard as KVM was USB only. Just as well as during the email problem the batteries in the wireless keyboard ran out.

NOTE - USB keyboard is not recognised when you boot Windows, so no F8 and getting into safe mode!

If the redundancy is enough to buy an Aston then don't. Buy property. It's getting very cheap in some places.
Get the sums right and you can live off the rents.

At least that's what I'd do.

All donations appreciated no matter how small. Even 10p can be enough to buy some ribbon to tie the tat up with. £1.00 can feed a tat habit for an hour. £50 can buy a tat husband a tank of petrol to escape.

I am tempted to spend some of the redundancy on a seal clubbing trip - or is the season over now?

I know they ask but there is no way they will or can check your answers. They really don't care.
When I "retired" the HR dept had difficulty with my records. One sweet girl called me to apologise that they seemed to have GCE's listed and surely that should read GCSE?
She could not comprehend that education had been invented before she went to school herself.

Tsk, tsk.

We met there as now Mrs TMR (to be) is no longer gainfully employed, she has decided to do some decorating and the garden. After the breakfast bap we bought the paint and then when to the gardening section. A kindly old white haired B+Q came up to me and said "do you want decking?". Luckily, I got my punch in first and dropped him, but it just goes to show how careful you have to be these days.

I am entertaining myself today by locking out certain user accounts. Then, when they phone, I ask them to unplug the network cable and leave it "dangling downwards, because the network is full and this helps to drain it".
After ten minutes or so, I unlock their account and tell then to put the network cable back in.

Voila - it all works again.

Whenever I install a system I connect up the modem and test it on my laptop.

Then I unplug the LAN cable, put my thumb over the RJ45 connector and hand it to the customer to connect to their own PC. "keep your thumb over the end so all the broadband doesn't drain out"...

It is surprising how many actually do it...  point:

Wait till someone locks their computer to go on a break, then go into it and take a screenshot of the desktop. Shut all the programs down, get rid of their icons and hide the taskbar. Then replace the desktop background with the screenshot you took. You can have great fun watching them try and work out what the hell has happened to their machine.

After that, interview for a job with an estate agents chain - if I get the job, will I be excommunicated?

Interview at Jobcentre this morning.

Boring, boring, boring.

The stack of applications I presented were not even looked at. She found on ejob on their system, Trainee IT Support person £12K!
Even more cough, splutter, spit.

Now have to go back weekly to see if someone else can help me.

I have been unemployeed for one day (that was because it was a New Years Day so I could not start new job) since 1969, does it look like I am trying to avoid working?

Off to Wimbledon shortly to see estate agent bods.
Mrs Tel is considering coming with me, so she can "browse" the shops whilst I am grilled.

The day just gets better and better.

Today, I have...

Sent PC kit, printers, scanners etc. on to to new place.  Packed it all myself, despite it not being my job, but none of the usual "luggers" in my department were in. A 68 kilo printer is hard to shift alone...

Disposed of 66 phones - again lifting the crates they were in.

"Other" lugging.

All done by 10.30.

I thought my day's work was over, but no...

Two dead PCs.

THEN - as my luggers/building engineers (?) weren't in, other stuff:-

Third floor bog flooded - all I could do was isolate the water supply to stop further flooding.

Fat bloke stuck in lift between third and fourth floor - manually crank him down to third level and then pull door apart to release him. He didn't even say thanks.

Now extremely pissed off. One of the bitches even had the gaul to say "are you going home so early"...

My good Grammar school upbringing came to the fore and I said nothing.

Sheesh, kids of today...

Well, 6 months of Jobseekers Allowance has finished and now after 3 weeks of personal interviews, I get sent on a Personal Development Course in Croydon. Induction was all day and then this is followed by 12 weeks of half-day sessions. I didn't want to do any of the "courses", interview techniques etc but I still have to attend every Thursday. There are about 50 people there - 8 eight PCs to share plus various newspapers some of which are a week out of date! Half the attendees seem to have criminal records and can't get a job. The remainder, apart from a few, seem to be long term jobless, up to 10 years without working. Apparently if I don't attend they will stop my benefits - unfortunately I don't get any!

I was told at the Jobcentre that this course wasn't really suitable for me (can do all of this from home) but if I write a letter explaining why it's not for me, they will take me off it! Wouldn't take a verbal request though.

Anyway it's time for a Youngs now.

Well done you for giving it a go. They are really twats aren't they? I, as I told you, got caught up in one of these years ago. Nothing seems to have changed and I don't suppose it ever will.

I am old enough to remember when one had to sign on at the "Labour Exchange" every week and as you signed on they would hand you notes to employers with vacancies. The following week you had to return the note, suitably annotated, to prove you had been for the interview. The employed had to give reasons why you had not got the job.

Six weeks and you had to have an Interview with "The Manager" who would flick through a card index of vacancies until he found one that "might suit" and send you directly round there. Nothing to do with whatever you could or could not do. Nothing to do with qualifications ~ always labouring work but you got a job, often for two or three weeks, sometimes only a day or two, until the hole was dug, the cement shifted, the bricks moved or the cargo unloaded and then back to the weekly sign on.

I sometimes wonder if a return to that system wouldn't be a good idea for the work-shy whilst those with some qualifications who clearly are out of work through no fault of their own could be dealt with sensibly.

That's shitty! Which company (concession)?
Presumably the shop/store company was sold and the concessions told to sod off so that the TUPE rules wouldn't apply. Surely though her employers were the concession owners who would be liable for redundo ~ which ought to be more than the Govt pay out. Employment law is tricky but there must be something she can do against them.

She worked for Viyella (about the last 9 years). She transferred to them from Jaeger who at that time were part of the Coates Paton group, so continous employment.
Viyella were put into administration in January and last Friday were sold to Austin Reed - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7875469.stm

This morning phoned head office about another matter and was told her position - she has been made redundant by the administrators as Austin Reed did not purchase the concession in Allders in Croydon (one of their most profitable) and so she now has to claim her redundancy, notice payment and any holiday pay due, from the Govt - Redundancy Payment Office.

Allders did go under, but the name and the Croydon were bought up and are doing quite well, compared with House of Fraser for example.

I think what affects her most at the moment, is the break up of a team who have worked together for some time.

She has probably got a job with a new concession opening in Allders which is managed by her old boss, so not too bad.

I think that also has already realised that the 2 of us stuck at home all the time is not a good idea, well at least during this time of year.

Thanks for the kind words.

I have the Jobcentre to visit this afternoon. Tis made worse dute to the fact that I have to travel over (pub transport) just as all the kids are leaving school! Usually have a headache by the time I get there, but the Youngs afterwards seems to have a soothing effect.

Mrs S#2 and I lived and worked together (she was my assistant when we started the relationship) for the first 6 years we were together. And by together I mean 24 hours a day x 7days a week. The only time we spent apart was when I had access to my kids on a Saturday afternoon and that was only until they moved out of their mother's house and into ours. We have never left our children with anyone else so have not had a "night out" on our own in fifteen and a half years. I returned to work alone when the THW was born in June 93 until I was retired and since then we have been together 24 hours a day until two and a half years ago when she started a part time job lecturing ~ prior to that she had tutored at home. She works 8 hours a week and is out of the house for about 12 hours in total. Apart from visits every third Saturday to her mother in Lincolnshire, which I no longer accompany her on, we are in the same house most of each day. We have a few (very few considering) disputes but no major rows.
A major treat for her (and me) was that we went out to lunch on her birthday last year because it was the first time that we had no children at home  on her Birthday ~ all were at school ~ her Birthday usually falls in the Easter Hols or one of them is off sick. It was the first meal we had eaten together without at least one of them in tow them since the THW was born. We now make a point of "running away" once a month for a pub lunch.
I guess some couples can do it and other can't. We are both very tolerant of one another's foibles. Yes we do get irked with each other from time to time but mostly we just jog along.

PS She doesn't buy carpets.

Welcome to my world!  So far though, we haven't had any real arguments (apart from over DIY) and the angel even picked me up from the pub this evening  cloud9:
