Title: Alzheimer's
Post by: Nick on August 11, 2020, 01:02:41 PM
Glad to have seen Big Sis. When I left today she asked about my route home.
Straight up to Oxford, M40, Coventry and the M69 up to leicester.

She said quicker on the M3 -  it goes straight to Twickenham!

I left Twickenham in 1978 noooo:

Never easy to deal with whatever it is.  noooo:

Yes there are other dementia causes: for example Vascular, Lewy Bodies and Parkinsons dementia are some and precise diagnosis is hard.   In any event their effects are all highly distressing and few real treatments beyond how to cope with it.

Nah, not worth the bother. They are all ladies who lunch.... ::)

Still, charming of her to flee to the castle in the Orkneys indefinitely leaving her husband (a QC) earning the family dosh in London.  She has designed a charity tea towel in her absence   Only £10!  Not sure she does irony

Getting old is no fun. The three I'm sharing this sub-ward with don't have Alzheimer's but all are a bit doolally. none can be totally aware of what's happening, they need constant care as all three are incontinent, one need constant watching as can be violent (I had to hold him back after he assaulted a nurse, physically and racially) They tend to spend all day staring off into space with no engagement with anyone. No life worth living.  noooo:

I fear for my mind:

Just to keep my car battery charged while the car is in dock I run the engine every now and then. Came to do it this morning couldn't find the keys. Also couldn't find the spare set. Spent half an hour rummaging around, no luck. Was even about to contact my son and accuse him of hiding them.

Odd thing was that I had the fobs. I'd found other keys (what for I've no idea) and went to put them on the key hooks by the back door. I looked at the car keyfob and it was then I realised that the key folded in the fob  doh:

Senior moments don't come any better.  eeek:

Oh no that's awful, you said he wasn't well but that's just a grossly unfair turn of events for her

No...  noooo:

We have a close friend that was rushed into hospital two weeks ago...

He needed blood and everybody we knew of the same group turned up and donated.

Yesterday he was well enough to start some form of treatment but he tested positive for Covid (obviously caught in horsepickle) so all options are now off...  noooo:

WTF?

Funeral plans in hand for BiL but impossible to attend.

Why impossible to attend?  Thought funerals were OK

Probably good that she's in a nursing home though even though the whole situation isn't a good one

Funeral is a four hour drive (each way from here) Hard to stay overnight. Whatever happens will be grisly without contact as we shall just have to stare at each other from a distance.  His daughters both have Covid in the house and my niece will not leave the safety of the Orkneys, so it would just be me and my sister  noooo:

Update: Big Sis has asked me to attend the funeral as otherwise it will only be her there! Strict instructions not to tell Pink Sis (feud)

Funeral is at 11.00 a.m., so rather an early start.

Date (Jan 21) coincides with next Willycam (sod's law) so happy to cancel that.

Me: Have you met her?
Sis: No,, but I have a pic, she is a negro

Have you checked to see if she actually has Lasting Power of Attorney or Guardianship? They have to register with the Office of the Public Guardian and you can check to see if someone has one registered but from what I can see your sister wouldn't be able to appoint someone as they have to be both over 18 and have mental capacity to be able to do so. If she has anything then it sounds like she has gained Guardianship which can be cancelled.

If she is a registered Guardian, paying for her niece's medical bills in the US (if they are coming out of the estate), cutting down carers to 2 hours a week and pressuring her to sell up certainly sound like significant concerns that should be reported.

The Duchess has sent a man to "collect" it as it will help "create space" in the garage.

Lasting Power of Attorney is worthless until it has been registered with the OPG and once it has there are safeguards and protections for the vulnerable. If it has been registered then use the  procedure to raise your concerns and let the stepdaughters know about it as well.

By law the OPG can investigate concerns over how an attorney has acted since they registered the LPA, such as misuse of the donor’s money or decisions that are not in the donor’s best interests.

Pushing your sister into selling her home, drastically cutting her carer coverage and giving away her possessions are clearly not in her best interests and the US medical costs certainly seem to be misuse of her money.

You may be powerless but the OPG is not, so contact them, raise your concerns and let them start the investigation procedure. It doesn't matter who is the holder of the PoA or who witnessed it, if they find a case misuse of money and authority then they can act on it up to and including replacing him with someone else.

Update from Fraility intervention team- mum will not leave hospital until she is medically fit.
She has agreed to go to a residential placement. She could be there for a week or a month or more.
She will then be assessed for dementia etc when her pain has improved & a care package will be put in place.,

Um, isn't this what I told you in August last year you utter bitch!!?? Banghead Banghead Banghead Banghead

Established that visiting is permitted (checked with hospital) and heading that way on Friday. Dread to think what I will find.

Reply. "I can take other stuff when I see her in September"

Ward Sister calls from the hospital. The Duchess has called them to tell them that I must not be allowed to visit Big Sis tomorrow. She claims I will upset her.

Ward Sister says "I have thanked her for her advice but told her that she has no authority to do this. WHat time do you want to visit?"

Dementia wards are not pleasant, especially the screaming, the commodes and the heat.

Took Big Sis toiletries and clean nighties, towels and flannels.

Had to show her how to cool herself with baby wipes.

The nighties were too small, so have to return them to M&S

Stepdaughters going today but the DUCHESS has FORBIDDEN them to take nighties!! WHY??

I wrote to my nephew in KL last night

"It should be no surprise to you by now that I am very concerned about your mum (I saw her again yesterday) and even more concerned about the way that Susan is handling this (yes, thin ice). Your stepsisters are being wonderful but they are terrified of Susan,  They told me today that they dare not collect nightdresses from WP as this is not on "the list". Incidentally, Susan prohibited them from talking to me last year when I first brought this up. We have happily ignored this command.

I am not sure if you are fully aware of what is going on. I am acutely aware that this seems to be some sort of minefield, but my concern is for my sister and her welfare.

I have refrained from posting about my visit yesterday as last time I did this I got rebuked for being "negative".  Frankly, what Susan is doing is neglect verging on abuse. There, I said it. I have thought this for nearly a year, since she first told your mum that I was "going around saying she had Alzheimer's".  Perhaps Susan should go and see her.  I took her toiletries and fruit and new towels and things yesterday.

OK

She is in a shit place
She can barely speak
She was dirty and cannot wash herself. She gets showered twice a week!
She cannot now walk
She cannot cook
I had to show her how to use baby wipes across her face and neck to cool herself
Her clothes are soiled
SHe is in great pain

I suggest:

Private care post hospital release
Massive care package on return to WP OR Private residential care

Give me a call if you want to discuss this

As ever, I urge you to get to see her asap and maybe someone should sub Paul for a flight over too, so that he can. She is not going to improve and she will deteriorate. A bit of gentle leg pulling can elicit a small twinkle in the eye, but that needs close personal contact.

In the end yesterday all I could do was to sit and hold her hand. Please try to get to see her. And put some pressure on Susan. "

His reply in full:

I am heavily involved in the sale of my oil exploration company in the USA and need to be able to travel to the US at short notice any time between now and probably December. I can’t do this from the UK so there are a basket of issues that are holding me back.

Thanks for the note and all the best.

David

My nephew has finally made it over from Kuala Lumpur and went to visit. I asked him how she was

Very unwell. Not sure if she can function at home but let’s hope. The hospital environment is very depressing and mum needs to get out as soon as possible. We delivered clean clothes yesterday and took away the old. Mum was in the same clothes for the 3 days I was there which I was appalled at plus she had nothing clean to wear.

I asked who had been in charge of her welfare whistle:

The care package never materialised as no one will pay for it.

The Duchess wants to get 24 hour live in care on the NHS. She is bonkers.

The retirement flats where Sis lives will not have her back without a 24 hour care package

The Duchess has effectively made my sister homeless.

See if you can get a copy of the rules then you can check and see if the nominations are permanent or temporary or if there are any loopholes you can use.

On the other hand it will take a longer approach but give it a while and then try reminding the home that they have a duty of care and the mental health of your sister is going to be helped by the home giving nominations to relatives who can actually be bothered to visit.

Saw Big Sis

Shrunken
Slack jawed
Dead eyes
She didn't recognise me

Frankly, apart from her pulse she is all but dead noooo:
