My car seams to have developed a fault... When reversing I get a whining noise... (I know I've left myself open with that one) It's fine going forward.. Any ideas what it could be... rubschin:
Any advise would be appreciated Thumbs:
-
Growler is likely to be the best expert but the interweb is very good as every fault you will ever have has happened to someone else before. Just google <car model> whining in reverse
But I hate to say it but gearbox bearing comes to mind as that's just about the only item that does different things when in reverse
To help get better advice is it front or rear wheel or four wheel drive?

What he said.^^^
Bearing/s is the only logical answer.
Find a local gearbox repair specialist not a main rip off stealer or even 'Billy's back street repair sppecialists' either, as they invariably employ cheap to hire spotty yoofs who just break everything in my experiences. ::)

Are you bad at reversing? Maybe it's just frightened rubschin:

Most excellent helpful technical advice from ou ever greasy mitted master tech I see. whistle:

Does it whine as soon as you put it in reverse, or only once you start moving?
If the latter, it could be universal joints (cheaper). Our old pick-up did that.

It's front wheel drive...

What does Mr Boogs say?
It is your driving ... noooo: noooo:

. . .It's front wheel drive...
If it'd been rear wheel drive then it might have been possible to work out where the noise was from to confirm/clear the gearbox. But then it'd have been likely to be a Beemer = very expensive repairs
Has the googling of model + syptoms suggested anything?

Sounds like a plan
Doesn't sound like a slipping belt as they tend to whine forwards as well as reverse. But on the other hand slipping belt is usually a cheap fix so hopefully . . . . . . .

Don't you roll your eyes at me young lady.
That was a genuine and (uncharacteristically) serious suggestion.

The lady would show sympathy for the car, not derision.
She probably has a pet name for it and a photograph in her purse.

Ah yes things the Y chromosome has nuffin to do with
What do we think the car was and is now called
Was: Holly (as in Golightly)
Is: still Holly (ladies still see the good in all things gone bad)

Went out to Holly today reversed out the drive. No whining noise Yeees Thumbs: I thought perhaps because I had given her a name she was happy and playing nicely... Thumbs:
I stopped in Tesco spoke to my lovely friend on the phone. Did some shopping and then went hospital visiting. Coming out the carpark I noticed it had started again this time going forward.. noooo:
I have had a day off today so not been able to get any of the fitters to look at it...
I am wondering if I just never heard the noise going forward due to playing music at a seriously high level.. rubschin:

You haven't by some chance, locked someone in the boot? Or collected a stray feline?
That would account for the "come and go" aspect of the "whine" . . .
-
Is it one of these variable drive auto things by chance? rubschin:
What sort of car is it?
DAF's auto boxes used to be driven by belts that used to whine like 'ell.

No I made sure he was still under the shed.. ;) There was a dark furry thing lurking in the depth's of the boot but it was squashed I think the shopping may have had something to do with it... whistle:

Well yes, I would recommend one to anyone looking for a classic, but only IF well checked over first.
No road tax helps too, but that applies to any car built before August '74 now I believe. Thumbs:
I don't think there's a part for it that can't be obtained. Amazing!

My Dad had one when I was a child .. I remember her gleaming she was black and dad sprayed the roof white .. come to think of it he did that with a few cars he liked to be different.... ::)
He drove to Germany in it from Scotland before motorways except the M1 from Leicester it took 3 days me in the back.. No munny for hotels either... The fan belt went in a tunnel in Stuttgart remember the RAC had to fly out a new one.. I think we were towed out the tunnel...
He did the same thing when he bought his first new car a mini.. They had never seen one in Germany so everywhere we went we were surrounded dad loved it.. cloud9:

They are very special cars, British Heritage stuff, and virtually everybody has had one at sometiime in their family.
Road rage towards you evaporates whilst driving one of these.
