Your mother's were blokes dressed in suits wielding trays?  Sure could explain a lot...Mine used to smack us with a wooden spoon across the back of the legs or on our bums.
I have always thought that the worst thing about drowning was having to call 'help!' You must look such a fool. It's put me against drowning.

Mum had a bamboo stick behind the radiator in the kitchen... the mere sound of it being removed from behind the radiator struck terror into me and my sister!  scared2:
