It might be something to do with the inability of people to transfer plates from bikes to cars so making a 'personal' plate on a bike next to worthless.

FYI  A similar ban existed from commercial vehicles but when Princess Ann (or Margaret - I forget) wanted a particular plate off a milk float suddenly the regs disappeared.

It may be that money has overcome the bike ban too, but I don't think so.

Exactly so!

Personalised plates cannot be transferred to/from a bike/car if that makes sense? I used to have a personalised plate (  redface: ), when I was temporarily car-less for a period I tried to transfer it to my bike but could not ? the plate had to be ?suspended? ?til I got a suitable car again?

Minus 101 due to admitting to having a personalised plate in the first place! Cock waving of the first order.
"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Well, someone had to say it!

One of my neighbours has a personalised plate on one of his bikes - "SOB", for "Sad Old Biker"...
