School Grump 5: State v. Private
« on: July 10, 2007, 12:35:28 PM »
For complex reasons we are investigating sending The Boy to a private school. We happen to have a large one next door to us and I went there earlier.

Christ on a bike. The difference. Comfy sofas and real coffee. Fab facilities. Classes of 8-11 kids rather than the 30 + normal in state system.

Fabulous building (stained glass windows in the canteen!)

Delightful staff

Wonderful library.

Pistol shooting range scared2:

Specialist teachers for everything.

Every child streamed FOR EACH SUBJECT!!

Tennis courts

Swimming pool

It is a different world and is an object lesson in the social class divide. Even the Boy picked up on the atmosphere and shook hands with everyone with a sort of slight bow. He has declared it to be "posh" and desperately want to go there.

I am still stunned.

?6000 a year cry: cry: I shall be packing in the ciggies (wrote fags but though better of it!)

And (opportunity for DS) they will help out by offering The Boy an "Organ Scholarship" (wait for it) since he really does play the organ........

We are meant to be looking at other State schools this week, but I an't gonna bovver.

I wouldn't. If you can afford it then I wouldn't even think about sending him to state. As soon as I pop a sprog out Mr Wench will be looking at jobs in private schools so that they can go for free.

Worrying thought.

I have worked in one way or t'other in State Education for years but this was a revelation! Mrs Nick is going there on Thursday and I have told her that once she sees it she will be bowled over too. Very unfair though.

And afford it? Will be a struggle but the Organ Scholarship will help (come on DS!)

They probably meant the Captain mOrgan Scholarship for promising pirates.

If you can afford it, and ?6000 sounds very reasonable, I would not hesitate in your position.

Our one and only sprog went to a very small local junior school for around 2 years - initially very good and then we had a bleeding heart (in her mind not her body) headmistress arrive and wow what a change for the worst! Suddenly we were told we had to STOP  cussing: helping her with her reading and writing outside of school hours (she wanted to I assure you as I'm not one of those flash card from baby in the womb ambitious type of mums I can assure you) AND  Banghead because she was a tad bright (must take after Barman eh  ::)) she wouldn't be allowed to have additional work given at school to strech her BUT he expected to WAIT for everyone else to catch up.........................!!!!!

Not a tough decision for us to look to change schools then and like you we investigated the fee paying options - found a nice one (based on what the kids appeared to be like on our viewing mostly - happy, polite etc etc) in Windsor and prepared ourselves for the next few years of being partially brasick  cry:

She stayed there until 11 and then took her common entrance exam because we'd been doing our research meantime and found to be a marvellous non fee paying Catholic school (sorry the religion bit always creeps in somewhere doesn't it) and once we'd convinced the mafia (sorry Nun's) that despite not being 'C' ourselves we didnt sacrifice chickens or burn black candles EVERY night she was accepted.

Stayed there until 18 and left us for Univille.............

You really do need to do your research and shop around and then go with your gut feel on what's best for your childand you - Not saying that ALL fee paying schools are good (I do know some bad ones) nor that all state schools are bad either - but times have changed no doubt about that and education service are not what they were.

Mind you after all that have to say I failed my 11+  in the old system and then ended up going to a crap(ish) state school myself - oh those were the salad days weren't ??????
