Wireless Printers
« on: February 16, 2010, 02:07:16 PM »
Anyone got one? Are they any good? How hard are they to set up for several users?

Thinking that such a device might save everyone in the family bringing memory sticks to me and saying "can you print this off for me"

Why not get them all a printer of their own? ~ Too much grief. When the THW had her own in her room she was always working on her MacBook somewhere else in the house and when the printer (which was a cheapo) went wrong it seemed easier to say "use the big printers in the office" but to access those she has to go through my PC. Now the wife is also bring stuff to be printed every five mins so I am wondering about buying a wireless printer and telling them to "get on with it" ~ of course I foresee that like SWWLTBO's car and petrol, oil and water I will have to be the one who loads paper and makes sure the printer doesn't run out of ink.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I have one of these:

Lexmark S305

http://www.trustedreviews.com/printers/review/2009/11/29/Lexmark-Impact-S305---Wireless-All-in-One-Printer/p1

Prints, copies and scans. The setup was very easy and has worked on XP/Vista/Windows 7 with no problems. Apart from sometimes giving a "no paper" message for no apparent reason it work well.

We have one of these - http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/printer/Officejet/1/storefronts/CB783A%2523ABA

It's easy to set up for multiple users (although it takes its sweet time...) and pretty good all round. The only thing is that sometimes it gets confuddled when I wirelessly ask it to scan a document - even though it will do prints no problem. Usually just re-booting the PC and/or printer sorts it though.

We haven't had to buy ink cartridges yet, so I'm not sure how pricey they may be.

I have a HP L7590 at the office although it's networked rather than wireless. I didn't like the HP scanning software so I disabled it and use Paperport instead.

Thank you chaps.

Next question is on quantities.

We get through about 2000 copies per month.
That is one reason (well 2000 reasons) why I have a laser B&W three in one (Samsung) and an Epson three in one inkjet colour machine .

If I go over to wireless I can see the use rising rather than diminishing as it will be only too easy for them to press print rather than having to come to me.

Both the printers you have look fine for my purpose but can they handle the quantities ~ in other words do you use them as much as mine get used?
Also my laser printer gives crystal sharp printing which is necessary for the magazine proofs (due to my contract printer's method any blurring buggers up the lok of the whole thing) and the THW's school objected to her use of her cheap printer as it wasn't "professional" quality (another reason for my not replacing it but giving her controlled access to my more expensive kit) so I need laser quality finish.

I know that 2000 copies sounds a lot for a home office but given that THW's work goes through it, I produce and edit a magazine on it and SWWLTBO prepares all her lecture handouts at home it really isn't that many.

I doubt we even get through 200 copies a month and whilst I am pretty sure the printer could easily handle 2000 per month (it's only about 65 per day) I think you would end up spending a fair fortune on ink cartridges.

As I feared ~ another reason for having the laser B&W Samsung. I get 5000 copies out of a ?45 cartridge.
Somebody did send me details of a wireless laser recently but I now can't find the leaflet.

I'll have a rummage ~ this may take some time.

Simple answer is that I don't know. I doubt if we print 100 pages a month so whether it could handle the quantities you produce  shrugs:

Quality's good though.

I wouldn't be so generous with the paper and ink/toner but for the fact I can charge some of it off to the magazine and some to SWWLTBO's college.

BUT if I find one more little boy opening a pack of paper (500 sheets) so that he can do some drawing I shall beat the dust out of his trousers and no mistake.

I've got an Epson SX200, and it is actually pure unadulterated unmitigated utter shite with a mind of its own as to wheather it's actually in the right mood to  print or not, and of which particular random quality from it's female memory.

We have one of these Snoopy, and it was so simple to set up even I could do it. Everyone prints lots of stuff on it and it never misses a beat. Couldn't tell you how many sheets, but a fair few.
