Many many years ago I worked in Wandsworth which has/had a ferocious one way system.
One Friday evening the bastards shut it for some bridge repairs causing traffic chaos. I left work and it took me an hour to go half a mile so I stopped at this place

) for a pint or 9
A vision of delight appeared next to me at the bar (redhead) and ordered a drink. I hasten to add that this was pre-Mrs Nick!

I was smitten. And also pissed.
Too nervous to approach her (she was with four female friends) I wrote the following on a small piece of paper:
Hello,
I think you are lovely.
If you would like dinner sometime call me on this number (my number)
Nick"
I then folded up the piece of paper as small as I could, legged it to the door, thrust it into her hand and left, driving off fast.
I then forgot all about it (Effect of Youngs)
About 4 days later my phone rang and a husky female voice said, "hello, this is Louise. Thanks for your note. Let's meet"

She suggested the Chelsea Arts Club
http://www.chelseaartsclub.com/I went along.
At the bar (I was early for some reason) I tried to order a drink. "Are you a member?"
No
At which point the guy next to me said, "I am, and I will buy you a drink"
It was Roger McGough with Brian Patten
We got chatting. I explained why I was there. They were delighted and we went and sat at a table where they could see the door and I couldn't.
"What does she look like?" they asked.
"Dunno, red hair"
They then gave a commentary of the "Christ what a dog!" type until "Louise" eventually turned up.
She was very nice!
