Am I mis-remembering that the Grand National used to be the same day as the Boat Race?

National is on 5th April this year.

I think they coincide (Boat Race and National) when the tides (which are governed by the phases of the moon ~ as is Easter) happen to fall right with the racing calendar but I don't think it has ever been a permanent arrangement.

A Google check reveals that the "Aintree week" is traditionally the week leading up to the first Saturday in April. Other race meetings happen at fixed times throughout the year at various venues. This constitutes the "Racing Calendar" which is the name for the "major" meetings. Given that individual horses race frequently during any given year but some are "prepared" for specific races it follows that a "fixed" calendar would be necessary.

That is indeed correct.
