    It’s the same story in East Yorkshire. I wrote about the Caravan Tax a couple of weeks ago. The Chancellor decided to end an anomaly that has existed since VAT was first introduced, and will from October start levying VAT on static caravans to bring them in line with touring caravans on which VAT is already paid.

How can this be? VAT is paid entirely by the consumer. Don’t they understand basic taxation principles? Consumption taxes are wonderful.

Riddle me this: if VAT being added to pasties and caravans is destroying industries; why isn’t the VAT on everything else destroying other industries?

Answer: the destruction is past tense. It has already happened. There is a big hole in the economy where all the pasty-selling-equivalents from other sectors don’t exist because they cannot exist. And by “hole”, I mean companies that don’t exist, jobs that don’t exist, production that does not happen.

There is a lesson to be learned from this pasty fiasco; but I seriously doubt it is being learned.

There is a simple work around for the pasty tax (at least for pasty shops and suchlike). Sell the items cold which isn't covered by the tax but have a bank of coin operated microwaves in the shop that customers can use to heat up their purchases once they have bought them.

Can you imagine the time and frustration having to explain to each customer how this microwave works cos it is different from their one at home .

Then they heat it up too much and it burns their mouths. The lawsuits from lack of adequate instruction and supervision 

The amount of " do you have any change " requests  and then the brigade that don't want it heated in a microwave because those rays will kill em  etc etc etc

When we had the pubs back in 1989/93 I had many visits from the VATman.... One told me that I should have a separate button on the till to ring in Pork Scratchings as they counted as "Cooked Meat" and were thus VATable whereas Crisps, although cooked potatoes, were not subject to VAT. As I see it the pasty sellers have got away with it for too long. Unless the pasty is uncooked it follows that it must contain cooked meat. Reheating it should not come into the matter.
